Werder have strengthened their midfield following Jens Stage’s injury, with Youri Regeer joining from Ajax one day before the transfer window closes. In his first interview since arriving in Bremen, the 23-year-old Dutchman explains why the move felt right and why he sees football as something to enjoy rather than something to feel under pressure about.
WERDER.DE: Moin, Youri. Welcome to Bremen. What convinced you that Werder were the right club for you?
Youri Regeer: I had a good feeling about it as soon as my agent told me Werder were interested. It’s a great opportunity to play for a big club with a lot of history in Germany. I also think it’s the right next step for me and a place where I can continue to develop.
WERDER.DE: What did you already know about the club?
Youri Regeer: I knew Werder were one of the biggest clubs in Germany. They’ve won a lot of major honours over the years and I was also aware of the support they get, both at home and away. All of that made the decision very easy for me.
WERDER.DE: You’ve made 88 Eredivisie appearances for Ajax and FC Twente. Why did you feel now was the right time to move to the Bundesliga?
Youri Regeer: The last few years haven’t gone quite how I wanted them to and I found myself in a difficult situation. When I went back to Ajax from Twente, it no longer felt like the right fit for me. It wasn’t where I saw myself. The move to Werder feels like exactly the right step for me. Now I want to prove myself here, show what I can do in the Bundesliga and show people what kind of player Youri Regeer is.

WERDER.DE: You came through Ajax’s famous youth academy. Is that where you also developed the versatility to play both in midfield and at right-back?
Youri Regeer: I always played in midfield when I was younger. When Erik ten Hag was head coach at Ajax, he also used me at right-back for Jong Ajax and the first team. I still think midfield is where I’m at my best, though.
WERDER.DE: And in midfield, are you more comfortable in an attacking or defensive role?
Youri Regeer: I think I can do both, but I’m at my best as a box-to-box number eight. I can contribute defensively and also help the team build attacks.
WERDER.DE: Jens Stage is going to be out for the next few months, so there could be an important role there for you…
Youri Regeer: I hope so. That’s what I want, and I think the club see me as someone who can take on that responsibility. But ultimately I want to earn my place through what I do on the pitch.
WERDER.DE: That also brings a certain amount of pressure. How do you handle that?
Youri Regeer: When you’re a kid, you dream about becoming a professional footballer. So I don’t really see it as pressure. I’m just happy to be able to go out there and play football.
WERDER.DE: Ajax are one of the biggest clubs in the Netherlands and Werder have a similarly rich history in Germany. Both also have huge fanbases. How much are you looking forward to playing at the Weserstadion?
Youri Regeer: Everyone I’ve spoken to about the club has mentioned the atmosphere. There were so many Werder fans in Freiburg on Saturday as well. I can’t wait for the next matchday and to experience a full Weserstadion for myself.
