SV Werder Bremen have strengthened their defence on transfer deadline day, signing Brazilian Arthur from fellow Bundesliga side Bayer 04 Leverkusen on loan until the end of the season. Head of professional football Peter Niemeyer confirmed the signing on Tuesday.

“Arthur is a player who can immediately help us out. He’s familiar with the Bundesliga and has showcased his ability at the highest level, so we’re delighted that he has decided to join us,” explained Peter Niemeyer.

Head coach Daniel Thioune continued: “His quality will allow him to fit in quickly with us and he’ll be an option for the back line straight away. He’s quick and strong technically, meaning he can also help our attacking play too.”

Arthur, born Arthur Augusto de Matos Soares, is looking forward to the challenge: “I obviously know Werder from the Bundesliga and also the atmosphere at the Weserstadion. I’m looking forward to getting to know the boys and being able to play here.”

Arthur began his career at Cruzeiro and Araxa’s academies before moving to CR Flamengo in 2020 and América Mineiro in 2021. He then arrived in Europe, completing a move to Bayer 04 Leverkusen in 2023. He won the double with the Werkself in 2024. Arthur played a total of 44 Bundesliga games for Bayer and made 13 appearances in the Champions League.
