Sunday’s opening league game of the season away at SC Freiburg is one that the Green-Whites must quickly move on from. Captain Marco Friedl, Niclas Füllkrug, head coach Daniel Thioune and managing director for sport Clemens Fritz shared their reactions following the 4-1 defeat away at SC Freiburg.
Head coach Daniel Thioune: “We let them get on top before their opening goal from a set piece and then lost our way before half time. Suzuki played a great game, but the fact remains that we should have defended the header better. We never recovered from their early goal after the break. Freiburg have developed a good balance over the years and have already played several competitive games this season, which we hadn’t before today. We’re not quite as well drilled as Freiburg yet. We need to maintain our intensity throughout the whole 90 minutes and have more of the ball, which needs to improve against Leipzig.”
Captain Marco Friedl: “Of course we wanted to start the season in a more positive way. We actually settled into the game well in first ten to 20 minutes, even if Freiburg were perhaps more dominant. We let the goals in far too easily before the break, and the ten minutes after the interval were enough for Freiburg to double their lead. We need to improve our performance on the pitch.”
Niclas Füllkrug: “We settled into the game well but had to start chasing the play following the set-piece goal. It was clear that our patterns of play are not yet fully engrained yet. We missed Jens during the game and we really felt for him yesterday. We now need to make sure we develop our understanding on the pitch quickly. We have to learn from today.”
Managing director for sport Clemens Fritz: “We started the game well and had spells of possession. We then let ourselves get pushed too deep and our play became hectic. After conceding the first goal, which we should’ve defended better, we lost our courage on the ball. Following half time, the third goal put an end to our hopes, and the bad news regarding Jens’ injury means we also have further uncertainties to contend with. It’s a huge blow for us and we’ll support him through it. It’s important that we now work together as a team to improve.”
