“Job done today, plenty of work ahead of us”

Werder Bremen comfortably came out on top in their DFB-Pokal opener against Lüneburger SK Hansa, securing a 3-0 victory to book their place in the second round. WERDER.DE caught up with the Green-Whites in the mixed zone after the affair to reflect on the start of the competitive season.

Head coach Daniel Thioune: “We did what we needed to do, and we're through to the next round. We came through it virtually unchallenged, as the opposition hardly had a chance. Of course, we could have scored more goals, and there are also a few things we can talk about, such as the tempo of the game in that first half. Perhaps it’s actually good for us that we didn’t go supernova today. One of the crucial things that we saw this afternoon was Ludovit Reis and Niclas Füllkrug back out on the pitch. In the end, it’s about getting through to the next round, and we’re happy with that.”

Captain Marco Friedl: “We’re pleased to have made it through to the next round. We defended well in transition and dealt with everything confidently. But we were too slow in possession, made too many mistakes and only took the lead from a set piece. We were better in the second half and had several really good chances to win by an even more convincing margin. We still have plenty of work ahead of us, but for today, that’s job done.”

Goalscorer Niclas Füllkrug: “It wasn’t my best game – I’m just happy that I managed to score. A few of us at Werder, myself included, have had some bad experiences in the first round of the cup before. I’m very happy, then, that we came through it relatively comfortably. The last few days have been incredibly emotional. I hadn’t realised just how much I’d missed this, but it’s just unmatched, the stadium today.”

Goalscorer Ludovit Reis: “It was fantastic to see how many fans were here. Everyone expects us to win by a bigger margin, of course. We were better in the second half, and the important thing is that we’re through to the next round.”
