Team news: After missing the first round of the DFB-Pokal due to a muscle problem, goalkeeper Karl Hein is fit to start against SC. Eren Dinkçi, who returned to SVW on loan from Freiburg this summer, was also able to return to team training in recent days. Like Hein, the attacker had also missed the cup game with a muscle issue. Felix Agu (caöf), Keke Topp (ACL) und Oskar Wójcik (muscle problems) remain sidelined. Mitchell Weiser (match fitness) is not yet ready to return to the squad.

The most recent meeting: Werder and Freiburg last faced each other on matchday 21 last season. Not only was it the 50th Bundesliga match between the sides, but it also marked Daniel Thioune's touchline debut for SVW. Former Green-White Niklas Beste scored the only goal of the game, as Freiburg celebrated a 1-0 win at home. Werder have won 24 of the previous encounters to SC's 16, along with 10 draws.

Hard runners: SC Freiburg covered a total of 119.8 kilometres in their 5-1 win over Fortuna Düsseldorf in the first round of the DFB-Pokal. This was just shy of the 121.1 km they averaged per game last season, which was also the third-most of any side in the Bundesliga (behind FC Bayern and TSG Hoffenheim).
