Karim Coulibaly has left Werder Bremen after two years at the club. The 19-year-old centre-back has joined French top-flight side RC Strasbourg with immediate effect, as managing director for sport Clemens Fritz confirmed on Friday morning.

“Karim is a perfect example of the path we’ve chosen to take by signing young players with the potential to develop and helping them progress. He took his opportunity with us in exemplary fashion and established himself as a Bundesliga regular. Although losing him is a blow from a sporting perspective, the lucrative offer means accepting the deal is the financially responsible decision for the club. We wish Karim all the very best for the rest of his career, both on and off the pitch,” said Clemens Fritz.

“When I joined Werder two years ago, the people at the club laid out a clear path for me and everything they told me came true. I’d therefore like to thank my teammates, my coaches, all the staff, the club, my friends, my family and, of course, the fans for their support and the trust they placed in me. I’m grateful for every great moment, but also for every difficult situation that I was able to learn from. Werder Bremen will always be a special part of my story and my life,” said Coulibaly as he bid farewell.

Karim Coulibaly joined Werder’s U19s from Hamburger SV in 2024 and won the U19 DFB-Pokal in his first season. The Oldenburg-born defender made his Bundesliga debut away to Eintracht Frankfurt in August 2025 before scoring his first Bundesliga goal a week later in his first home appearance, against Bayer Leverkusen. Coulibaly made 27 appearances for Werder in total.
