Werder hope for success in first home game of the season

The Bundesliga finally returns to the Weserstadion! On Saturday 5th September at 15:30 CEST, SV Werder Bremen welcome RB Leipzig to the Weserstadion. Find out in our match preview how head coach Daniel Thioune has weighed up our opponents, who’s available to play and why we might see a triple debut.
The squad: Felix Agu (calf), Keke Topp (ACL), Jens Stage (thigh) and Justin Njinmah (thigh) will miss the first home game of the season though injury. A return to the squad is still too early for Mitchell Weiser, who has only recently returned to training. After being forced to leave the pitch last weekend, it is not clear if Senne Lynen will be fit to play.
Head coach Daniel Thioune on the opponents: “Leipzig started the season really well, with an xG of over 4 and over 20 shots recorded. We’re playing against a Champions League team, so the quality of our play and our passing will be key. We have to keep up the intensity and match them physically.”
Triple debut: The first home game of the season could also see Werder debuts for three last-minute signings: Youri Regeer, Moussa Ndiaye and Arthur. During the pre-match press conference, Daniel Thioune confirmed that the latter will be an option for the starting XI. Niclas Füllkrug and Eren Dinkçi could both play their first game at the Weserstadion since rejoining the club during the summer transfer window.

The last time the teams met: Werder and Leipzig have faced each other a total of 19 times. RBL have taken all three points on 13 occasions, whilst Werder have won twice and four games ended in a draw. The Green-Whites were defeated in both fixtures against Leipzig last season. RBL won the first of those games 2-0 following goals from Assan Ouedraogo and Xaver Schlager. Salim Musah’s first Bundesliga goal (90+4’) came too late during Werder’s 2-1 defeat at the Weserstadion.
Two familiar faces set to meet again: Niclas Füllkrug and Christopher Nkunku left Werder and Leipzig respectively in summer 2023, before both making their returns to the Bundesliga in summer 2026. Both players also shared the Torjägerkanone at the end of the 2022/23 campaign, and are both still waiting for their first goal of the season.
The match officials: Benjamin Brand will officiate Saturday’s game at the Weserstadion. The linesmen will be Thomas Stein and Marco Achmüller. Sascha Stegemann will act as the fourth official. Sören Storks and Christian Fischer will take charge of VAR.
