Werder sign Alexander Schlager

SV Werder Bremen have completed their goalkeeping group. Alexander Schlager has joined the Green-Whites from FC Red Bull Salzburg and will strengthen the squad at the Weser. Schlager completed his medical on Friday and signed his contract with SVW. The two clubs have agreed to keep the financial terms of the transfer undisclosed.

“We’re delighted to have brought in another strong goalkeeper in Alexander,” said Peter Niemeyer, Werder’s head of professional football. “We’re convinced that he will fit very well into our team, both in terms of his ability and his character. It means we go into the season with a very strong goalkeeping group, one that will keep pushing each other. That was exactly what we wanted when looking at this position. Like all our World Cup players, he will join up with the team after our training camp in Zillertal.”

“I’m really happy to be part of Werder Bremen and I can’t wait to get to know the fans, the club and the city,” said 30-year-old Alexander Schlager, who is looking forward to his new challenge. “I’ll give everything in this shirt and want to represent the club in the best possible way. I’m just excited for everything that lies ahead.”

Alexander Schlager began his footballing journey at ASK Salzburg, before moving on to Red Bull. After progressing through various youth teams in the RB setup, he made the step into senior football with FC Liefering. Spells at SV Grödig, Floridsdorfer AC and LASK followed before he returned to FC Red Bull Salzburg in 2023. Across his career, he has made 241 appearances in the Austrian Bundesliga, as well as 23 in the Europa League and 10 in the Champions League. He has also won 30 caps for Austria, most recently impressing at the World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico.

With the signing of Alexander Schlager, SV Werder Bremen have finalised their goalkeeping group, which also includes Karl Hein, experienced goalkeeper Markus Kolke and young talent Stefan Smarkalev.
