"Job done" – Thioune looks to the future

PRESS CONFERENCE WITH HEAD COACH DANIEL THIOUNE

At the point in time in which SV Werder’s status as a Bundesliga team for the 2026/27 season was confirmed, the Green-Whites had just landed back in Bremen from Sinsheim. The pilot kept the team up to date with the score in Wolfsburg throughout the flight, with FC Bayern München’s victory meaning SVW would play top-flight football again next term. Head coach Daniel Thioune expressed relief the following day, while also turning attention to preparations for the future.

Werder’s downward trend began in the winter, with the club finding itself 17th in the table come the end of February. Daniel Thioune had taken over the reins just before that time and had one goal in mind, namely to secure Bundesliga survival. “Job done, I would say”, said the 51-year-old during Sunday morning’s press conference. “We said that it would go down to the wire but it’s done and dusted now with a week to spare.”

SV Werder would obviously have preferred to have got themselves over the line with a result away to TSG Hoffenheim. The Green-Whites did make sure of their place in the Bundesliga for next season through their own efforts, though, despite the 0–1 defeat in Kraichgau. “We were relying on others’ results this weekend, but we had to earn every single one of our points ourselves beforehand.”

The head coach has shown his worth as a result. His position at the helm of SVW is his first in Germany’s top tier, in which he hopes to continue beyond the current campaign. “I have earned the chance to work with this team and in the first division. Things have panned out so that I should be able to work here after 1st July”, he said.  “I was the right coach for the situation and now we have a great chance to develop something.”

The former player has focused primarily on stabilising the team's defence over the course of the past weeks, but Thioune has put further targets in place for the coming season. Changes to the squad will have to happen due to the number of players currently on loan. “It is not only about new players but also that the players already in the squad can reach their potential. Nonetheless, there will be more than just three or four changes”, revealed Thioune. “We also want to reach a point where we can win games even when we're not at our best, rather than ending up on the losing side because of a lapse in concentration, like yesterday. If I’m afforded the time, I believe we can make a lot of progress.”
