Oskar Wójcik is Werder Bremen’s fifth summer signing of 2026. In his first interview with WERDER.DE, the Polish centre-back discusses the high expectations he has for himself and his time at Werder, explains why the move fulfils a lifelong dream and reveals the role the Green-Whites’ supporters played in convincing him to join the club.
WERDER.DE: Moin Oskar, welcome to Werder! How was your first day in Bremen?
Oskar Wójcik: Thank you. I arrived in Bremen yesterday after a fairly long journey. Today it was straight into my medical, with all the different tests.
WERDER.DE: What are your first impressions of Bremen and Werder?
Oskar Wójcik: I already knew quite a lot about Werder because I watched loads of videos and read a lot about the club. I also spoke to plenty of people about Werder, and everyone told me about the incredible fans. They're crazy in the best possible way. I also think the stadium is fantastic. I just really wanted to be here, so I'm delighted that it's finally happened.
WERDER.DE: So the fans were one of the reasons you decided to sign for Werder?
Oskar Wójcik: Yes, absolutely. I'm the kind of player who loves playing in front of loud, passionate supporters. The very first thing I saw when I started seriously looking at Werder was videos of these incredible fans.

WERDER.DE: That sounds promising. You can definitely look forward to playing in front of those supporters at the Weserstadion. Let’s take a quick look into the past, though. You made your breakthrough in the Polish top flight with Cracovia last season. What made the difference last year?
Oskar Wójcik: We had a new head coach come in before the season, and he simply gave me the chance to play and prove myself. He trusted me to perform at a high level. I ended up playing every single match and I must have done something right, otherwise I probably wouldn't be here now (laughs). It was something really special for me. I spent nine years at Cracovia. It was my dream club growing up – the team I always wanted to play for.
WERDER.DE: So you've been a Cracovia supporter since you were a child?
Oskar Wójcik: Yes, and I got the chance to play for them. Dreams really do come true.
WERDER.DE: Now you've chosen to take the next step in your career with Werder Bremen. You've already spoken about the fans – what else convinced you?
Oskar Wójcik: My other big dream was to play in one of Europe's top five leagues, and then Werder showed an interest. Werder is simply a huge club. Every football fan knows Werder Bremen. I spoke to my family and together we decided that this great club was the right move. I know last season wasn't a good one, but I want to win every game here and help make Werder one of the best teams around.
WERDER.DE: You're a centre-back. How would you describe yourself as a player?
Oskar Wójcik: I'm someone who loves a battle. I'm quite tall but I'm also quick. Most importantly, I never give up and I'll always give everything for the team and the fans.
WERDER.DE: At the end of May, you made your senior debut for Poland and shared the pitch with Robert Lewandowski. What was that like?
Oskar Wójcik: It was an amazing experience. As a footballer, representing your country is something you really want to do. I got the chance to make my debut, and I'd always wanted to wear the Poland shirt. It was a dream come true, but of course, I want to earn many more caps.
WERDER.DE: You've already said it was also a dream of yours to play in one of Europe's top five leagues. What are your expectations of the Bundesliga?
Oskar Wójcik: I just want to win every game, even though I know how tough this league is. The fans want reasons to celebrate, and I want to do everything I can to help give them that.
WERDER.DE: Do you know any Polish players who have represented Werder in the past?
Oskar Wójcik: Well, Dariusz Stalmach and Dawid Kownacki are both here now. From previous years, I know Sebastian Boenisch and Ludovic Obraniak. I also know Maik Nawrocki came through the academy here.
WERDER.DE: That's every Polish player from the last 20 years! Very impressive. Did you already know Dariusz Stalmach and Dawid Kownacki?
Oskar Wójcik: I met Dariusz today for the first time. Before that, I didn't know either him or Dawid personally. I met five of my new teammates in the dressing room today. Everyone was really friendly and helpful. I'm looking forward to getting to know the rest of the squad.
WERDER.DE: Pre-season gets underway tomorrow. What are your goals as you begin this new chapter in Bremen?
Oskar Wójcik: I have high expectations of myself. I want to play in every game. That's why I'm here. I want to be the kind of player who always gives absolutely everything.
WERDER.DE: Oskar, thanks for your time. We wish you all the best for your first season at Werder!
Oskar Wójcik: Thank you very much.
