SV Werder Bremen kicked off their summer preparations for the 2026/27 season on Friday, 10th July 2026 with the traditional round of performance tests. After a long spell without matches, the first day back brought plenty of familiar faces together again, while also giving the squad the chance to welcome several new arrivals. We also gathered some thoughts from the players as things finally got back underway.
The performance tests provide Werder’s fitness coaches with the data they need to put together individual strength and training plans for the first-team squad. Alongside those assessments, the players also go through a series of orthopaedic checks, as well as various physical tests and endurance testing. New signings Kenny Quetant, Chuki, Oskar Wójcik and Dariusz Stalmach will also meet their new team-mates for the first time over the course of the two days.
Marco Friedl, Romano Schmid, Patrice Čović, Karlo Šimić and Mick Schmetgens are not yet involved following their appearances at the World Cup and European U19 Championship respectively, and are expected to rejoin the team by the end of the training camp in Zillertal at the latest. For new signing Cedric Itten, his arrival at his new club depends on how much further Switzerland go at the World Cup in Canada, Mexico and the USA. The Swiss face world champions Argentina in the quarter-finals in the early hours of Sunday morning (12th July, 03:00 CEST).
Reaction from day one of testing
Daniel Thioune: “I’m delighted we’re back underway. You could tell the lads were really up for it after their time off. The mood was good throughout, and the new players made a positive impression too.”
Amos Pieper: “The long break did me good and was important after last year. Now we’re looking forward to getting started because there’s a lot to do. It’s great to be back here and, as well as all the new faces, I was also looking forward to seeing the familiar ones in the team and staff again.”
Dariusz Stalmach: “I was already here at the Weserstadion yesterday and met most of the lads, the coach and the staff. Today is my first official day, though, and I’m really happy to be here.”
Karim Coulibaly: “There’s a lot going on here on the first day with all the testing, but I feel great. It’s a lot of fun to be back with the lads. We’re all really enjoying the fact that things are getting going again.”
