SV Werder held their first training session of the 2026/27 season on Sunday afternoon, 12.07.2026. Following two days of performance testing, head coach Daniel Thioune welcomed a large group of players back to the training ground. In addition to the club’s international players, two other squad members were also absent.
Summer signings Kenny Quetant, Chuki, Oskar Wójcik and Dariusz Stalmach trained alongside their new teammates for the first time. Skelly Alvero and Dawid Kownacki have also returned to Bremen following loan spells with SC Amiens and Hertha BSC respectively. Marco Friedl, Romano Schmid and Alexander Schlager, who all represented Austria at the World Cup, as well as Switzerland’s Cedric Itten, are not expected to link up with the squad until after the training camp in Zillertal. The same applies to Patrice Čović and Karlo Šimić of Croatia and Germany’s Mick Schmetgens, who were involved at the U19 European Championship.
Mitchell Weiser, who is recovering from an anterior cruciate ligament injury, and Julian Malatini, who suffered a syndesmosis ligament tear, are continuing to work individually. As planned, Justin Njinmah took part only in the warm-up and passing drills due to a muscular issue, before he ended the session early. Five U23 players were also involved: Luca Höcker, Mats Heitmann, Paul Erevbenagie, Darwin Soylu and Ramiz Hamouda.
