Switzerland are through to the round of 16 at the World Cup in Canada, Mexico and the USA after beating Algeria 2-0 in the round of 32. New Werder signing Cedric Itten was an unused substitute.
Switzerland were the last of the remaining European teams to get their knockout campaign underway. In front of 52,497 fans at BC Place in Vancouver, they produced a dominant performance and ultimately deserved their place in the last 16, even if Algeria made the brighter start. Breel Embolo’s early opener (10’) gave Murat Yakin’s side confidence, and from that point on the 'Nati' had the game under control. Dan Ndoye struck moments after the restart to effectively settle the contest. His 46th-minute goal was a real blow from which the Fennec Foxes never recovered.
The victory over Algeria was Switzerland’s first win in a World Cup knockout match since 1938. Itten and Switzerland will be back in action on Tuesday, 7th July, when they face the winners of the tie between Colombia and Ghana. Kick-off is at 22:00 CEST, again in Vancouver.
