SV Werder Bremen return to Bundesliga action on Saturday, 9th May, when they face TSG Hoffenheim at 15:30 CEST in Sinsheim. SVW head coach Daniel Thioune took to the press conference chair on Friday morning and began the media round with the latest squad news. The headline updates concerned Felix Agu, who could return to the squad, and Jens Stage, who could potentially miss the trip, although the likelihood of such a blow is minimal as of this morning.
Jens Stage was absent from training at the start of this week, although it’s probable that he’ll be back with the team to face Hoffenheim. “He was ill this week, and so we had to keep him away from the rest of the group,” explained coach Thioune. “I’m pretty positive that he’ll travel with us, though, and as long as he doesn’t suffer any setbacks, it’s very likely that you’ll see his name on the team sheet come Saturday afternoon.”
Another boost from the press conference came in the form of the latest update on Felix Agu, who has returned to team training and could be back in the matchday squad this weekend. “We have to consider whether he can help us for this game,” said Thioune. “He’s only been back in training a few days, so I’d rule out the possibility of a return to the starting XI for him. We need to look at how we want to set up the squad for TSG, and then make a decision on whether it makes sense for him to join us.”
Discussing further squad-related decisions, Thioune gave insight into his thought process regarding who should start in the number nine role against Hoffenheim. Academy graduate Salim Musah has recently been drawing attention to himself, and he’s getting closer to making his first start for the club, according to Thioune: “Salim Musah is also a candidate to start, and it makes sense to consider the possibility.”
Karl Hein (thumb injury), Julian Malatini (syndesmosis tear in ankle), Keke Topp (ACL), Leonardo Bittencourt (muscular injury) and Mitchell Weiser (ACL) are all still sidelined for the time being. It’s looking unlikely that Bittencourt will run out for SVW again, Thioune indicated: “The injury is such that a return to training this campaign is more or less ruled out. If he can’t manage that, he won’t be included in the squad. I’m still hopeful for a miraculous recovery, as it would be great for him. He’s done so much for this club over recent years. From a medical perspective, though, I can’t see it happening.”
