SV Werder Bremen missed the chance to take a decisive step towards securing survival, falling to a ruthless FC Augsburg side 3-1 in front of 40,000 fans at the Weserstadion. Midfielder Schmid briefly restored hope after the break, but it proved only a fleeting lifeline.

FIRST-HALF HIGHLIGHTSWerder lack precision, Kade ruthless

Head coach Daniel Thioune made one switch in the line-up that started the 1-1 draw away at VfB Stuttgart, with captain Marco Friedl returning to the XI and Niklas Stark making way for the skipper. As was expected to be the case, Augsburg allowed Werder to see the lion’s share of the ball, lying in wait with a view to hitting their hosts hard and fast on the counter. SVW had the better start to the game, with a Deman delivery threatening to beat Dahmen after taking a deflection from Fellhauer, although the ball only succeeded in hitting the side-netting.

After the resulting corner, a powerful deflected effort from Sugawara fizzed past the post by a whisker (6’). At the other end, Gregoritsch signalled Augsburg’s intent with a left-footed strike from distance that drifted well wide (9’). Werder’s threat was largely confined to efforts from the edge of the area thereafter: Pieper’s header at the far post missed the target, and Milošević tried his luck from the top of the box (18’). Augsburg, meanwhile, executed one of their trademark turnovers on the left and broke with purpose. Gregoritsch slipped a clever pass into the path of an advancing Kade, who poked the ball past Backhaus to open the scoring (24’).

Werder continued to labour in possession, lacking precision in the final third. The lead suited Augsburg’s approach perfectly, and soon Claude-Maurice’s delivery led to a headed chance (35’), while captain Gouweleeuw tried his luck from a tight angle (38’). The hosts struck again right on the stroke of half time, Kade grabbing his second by nodding home Giannoulis’ cross from close range (45+3’).

SECOND-HALF HIGHLIGHTSSchmid restores hope, but not for long

Daniel Thioune made a trio of changes at the interval, introducing Mbangula, Musah and Njinmah in an attacking-minded roll of the dice. The latter nearly made an instant impact, latching onto a long ball from Sugawara and muscling past two defenders, only to be denied by Dahmen (48’). Moments later, fellow substitute Musah nodded home from the middle of the box, but the move was chalked off with Deman just a step offside in the build-up (54’).

The aforementioned centre-forward then saw a tight-angle effort kept out by Dahmen, yet the ball broke kindly for Schmid, whose follow-up slipped through the goalkeeper’s gloves to pull one back (64’). Werder briefly rode the buzz within the Weserstadion thereafter, with Backhaus playing his part, producing an outstanding save on the break to thwart Claude-Maurice just minutes earlier (61’).

Any momentum was short-lived, however, as Augsburg hit back swiftly: following a corner, Wolf’s flick-on found Jakic, who bundled it over the line to restore the two-goal cushion (69’). That effectively knocked the wind out of Thioune’s side, with Augsburg stifling the hosts’ momentum and threatening to truly put the game to bed on the counter. It never quite came, but a long-range effort from Grüll that rattled the crossbar summed up a frustrating afternoon for the Green-Whites (90’).

The defeat sees Werder slip back to 15th, now hoping that other results go their way on Sunday. Next up is the final away trip of the 2025/26 campaign, as the side travel to Hoffenheim for a 15:30 CEST kick-off on Saturday, 9th May.
