SV Werder Bremen are set to welcome FC Augsburg to the Weserstadion on Saturday afternoon (15:30 CEST). At the pre-match press conference, head coach Daniel Thioune gave an update on which players are available this weekend.
The Green-Whites will be able to welcome back Marco Grüll from his yellow-card suspension, while Leonardo Bittencourt is set to miss the match due to muscular problems. Captain Marco Friedl, Jens Stage and Niklas Stark have only been training partially or having their workloads managed recently, but will likely be part of the matchday squad. “With the exception of Niklas, they all completed the full session today,” said Thioune. “If all three take part tomorrow, then it’s possible that they will all be available to feature.”
The head coach will have to make some tough decisions, with room for just 20 players in the matchday squad. “I will have to make decisions that mean that certain players will not be able to take part,” he said. “That will also be dependent on how we wish to play.”
Karl Hein (thumb), Julian Malatini (syndesmosis ligament tear), Felix Agu (muscular problems) Keke Topp (ACL), Wesley Adeh (fitness) and Mitchell Weiser (ACL) remain unavailable.
The latter will need to wait a while longer to make his comeback for the Green-Whites. "Nothing new has happened and he's not experiencing any major knee pain, but his body is reacting to the workload. As such, it doesn't make sense for him to return to training," Thioune explained. "We obviously want Mitchell to be back with us soon, but I don't think that he will be able to feature for us in a competitive game this season still."
