We are now into the business end of the season. SVW travel to VfB Stuttgart in their fourth-to-last game of the 2025/26 season. On Sunday, 26th April (15:30 CEST), Daniel Thioune’s side take on the DFB-Pokal finalists. Read the full match preview here.

Latest squad news: Leonardo Bittencourt and Marco Grüll are suspended for this weekend’s match after picking up their fifth yellow cards of the season against Hamburger SV. Meanwhile, Felix Agu is still struggling with muscular problems and will be unavailable. Karl Hein (thumb injury), Julian Malatini (syndesmosis tear in ankle), Wesley Adeh (ligament injury), Keke Topp (ACL tear) and Mitchell Weiser (ACL tear) are all still sidelined.

Head coach Daniel Thioune on the opponent: “Stuttgart played extra time in the DFB-Pokal on Wednesday. Firstly, congratulations to VfB. The question is what effect that will have on the opponent. Everyone in Stuttgart will be delighted and will perhaps be thinking about the final now. It will definitely have taken a lot out of them, but a team who’ve competed in Europe have unbelievable depth in their squad. I’m expecting a rejuvenated, composed Stuttgart side.”

Previous encounters: The reverse fixture resulted in a decisive 4-0 victory for Stuttgart. After striking twice before the break, VfB added two more in the later stages after a red card for Karim Coulibaly. The Green-Whites have better memories of their last visit to the MHP Arena, when SVW came from behind to snatch a late win thanks to an Oliver Burke brace. The two sides have faced each other a total of 113 times in the Bundesliga. VfB have won 41 of these and Werder have come away victories on 38 occasions. 35 matches finished in a draw.

Strong despite a high workload: VfB Stuttgart made it to the Europa League round of 16, while head coach Sebastian Hoeneß’ side reached the DFB-Pokal final on Thursday evening after a 2-1 extra-time win over SC Freiburg. However, this high workload and a busy fixture list have not proven to be an issue for Stuttgart. VfB have picked up 34 points from a possible 48 in the Bundesliga matches after their European and Pokal commitments. This results in an impressive average of 2.13 points per game.

Officials: Christian Dingert will take charge of the match at VfB Stuttgart. Benedikt Kempkes and Stefan Lupp will be his assistants, with Wolfgang Haslberger serving as the fourth official at the MHP Arena. Dr. Arne Aarnink und Christian Fischer will be on VAR duty.
