The Weserstadion will open its doors for the penultimate time in the 2025/26 Bundesliga season this weekend. SV Werder host FC Augsburg on Saturday, 2nd May 2026 at 15:30 CEST on matchday 32. The Green-Whites have one clear aim in their approach as they look to take what could be the final step towards securing Bundesliga survival with several games to spare. Read the full match preview here.

Latest squad news: Leonardo Bittencourt (muscle injury), Karl Hein (thumb injury), Julian Malatini (syndesmosis ligament tear in his ankle), Felix Agu (muscular issue), Keke Topp (ACL tear), Wesley Adeh (building up his fitness after an ankle injury) and Mitchell Weiser (ACL tear) are all unavailable. Marco Grüll is eligible again after his suspension, while captain Marco Friedl is also expected to be available after missing the game against VfB Stuttgart.

Head coach Daniel Thioune on the opposition: “We’re up against a good Augsburg side and I have a lot of respect for them. Since Manuel Baum took charge, their main focus has been on cutting down the number of goals they concede. That’s why we’re expecting them to sit deep, defend with discipline and try to shut down the spaces. We’re looking forward to the game, but it’s definitely going to be a tough one. Our aim will be to control possession, keep good defensive cover behind the ball and stop Augsburg from getting opportunities on the break.”

Previous meetings: FC Augsburg have recorded more Bundesliga wins (13) and scored more goals (42) against SV Werder than against any other opponent. However, the two sides have met 31 times, with both teams winning 13 matches each. The reverse fixture ended in a 0-0 draw, while the Green-Whites’ last win over Augsburg came in April 2024, when Romano Schmid, Marvin Ducksch and Olivier Deman scored in a 3-0 victory away from home.

Still something to play for: FC Augsburg have already secured Bundesliga survival, but they are still only six points off seventh and eighth place, meaning they retain an outside chance of qualifying for Europe. Should Germany still overtake Spain in the UEFA coefficient rankings, the Bundesliga would receive an additional European spot. If SC Freiburg were then also to win the UEFA Europa League, ninth place would even be enough to qualify for European football.

The officials: Daniel Siebert will referee the game against FC Augsburg. He will be assisted by Jan Seidel and Rafael Foltyn, with Konrad Oldhafer on duty as fourth official. Benjamin Cortus and Markus Sinn will be the VAR team.
