Maximilian Wöber had waited a long time for this moment. The 28-year-old finally drew a line under a frustrating spell riddled with injury setbacks as he made his Bundesliga debut for Werder in the 1-1 draw away at Stuttgart. Slotting into a back three, the Austria international played his part in securing a valuable point on the road; even coming close to snatching the winner with an ambitious effort late on. Moreover, a personal dream of his remains very much alive following the eventual return to action.
Having made his first appearance for the Green-Whites in the DFB-Pokal back in August, Wöber then had to wait 254 days for his first Bundesliga game. When Niklas Stark began to tire midway through the second half, the Leeds United loanee was introduced and seamlessly picked up where his teammate left off. “I’m relieved to have finally played in the Bundesliga for Werder this season,” said Wöber afterwards. “I’m glad that difficult period is behind me now. Hopefully I can get a few more minutes on the pitch this year and celebrate a win at home with the fans next week.”

Wöber almost secured all three points for his side in the dying moments of the game. After Werder won possession, he drove forward into a promising position, but the defender couldn’t make clean contact with his ambitious acrobatic attempt. “The fact I even tried that kind of volley probably shows how I’ve spent the last eight months on the PlayStation,” he joked. “I could have become a legend with one touch, but at least it gave the lads something to laugh about.”
With three league matches remaining, Wöber is now hoping for further opportunities to contribute as Werder look to achieve their aims for the season. Beyond that, the Austria international still has his sights set on a place at the World Cup. “Of course I’d love to be there,” he said. “I haven’t had much game time recently, but over the last 18 months with the national team, I’ve shown I can deliver when it matters, even without regular minutes in the tank.” After everything he’s been through, it would be richly deserved.
