Full of fight and ready for Leipzig
MATCH PREVIEW AHEAD OF THE HOME GAME AGAINST RB LEIPZIG

The international break is done and dusted, and we're straight back to it in the Bundesliga. SV Werder Bremen are all set to host RB Leipzig this Saturday (4th April) for a 15:30 CEST kick-off at the Weserstadion. The clash between the Green-Whites and the Red Bulls will also mark the first time ex-Werder head coach Ole Werner has returned to Bremen since leaving the club last summer. Werner's eventual replacement at the helm of SVW, Daniel Thioune, was keen to express his excitement ahead of the upcoming game.
Latest squad news: Senne Lynen is back available as an option to start against Leipzig. The same can’t be said for Jovan Milošević, who in the best-case scenario is only ready to play fifteen minutes maximum. There is a degree of doubt behind the match fitness of Jens Stage, although head coach Daniel Thioune is optimistic that he’ll be able play on the day. The Green-Whites will definitely be without those with long-term injuries: Karl Hein (thumb injury), Julian Malatini (syndesmosis tear in the ankle), Wesley Adeh (ligament tear), Maximilian Wöber (muscle problems), Niklas Stark (muscle problems), Keke Topp (ACL injury) and Mitchell Weiser (ACL injury). Victor Boniface and Amos Pieper, who have both started training on the pitch again, will also both be unavailable on Saturday.
Head coach Daniel Thioune on the opponent: “I’m looking forward to the affair. It’s the first time we’re up against a team from the top third of the league table since the game against Bayern. We’re going to have to deal with a team that has real attacking prowess. They create a lot of chances for themselves, and they have a lot of pace in the side. From our standpoint, it’s about picking up where we left off. We’ve taken a step forward in our defensive work, we allow our opponents a lot less, and we need to prevent Leipzig from having a sniff as much as we possibly can.”
Previous encounters: At first glance, Werder’s recent record against RB Leipzig looks rather bleak. Not only did they lose the reverse fixture 2-0 this season, but their last-ever win over the Red Bulls now dates back nearly seven years to a 2-1 home victory in May 2019. That being said, the home advantage has often proven crucial in this matchup, and could offer hope for Werder fans this weekend. In the last six meetings between Werder and RB Leipzig, the away team have never taken all three points, with the last two encounters in Bremen ending 1-1 and 0-0. In fact, Werder looked the more likely side to break the deadlock in the goalless draw last season, showing just how tight these clashes can be with a home crowd roaring behind you.

Ole Werner returns: RB Leipzig head coach Ole Werner was at the helm of SVW for three-and-a-half years, steering the side back to the German top flight and establishing the club as a mainstay in the Bundesliga. After coach and club went their separate ways last summer, the 37-year-old took up the reins of RB Leipzig. Just before the recent international break, he managed to celebrate his 50th Bundesliga win with a 5-0 victory over TSG Hoffenheim, and is now tasked with returning to his old stomping ground. Having lost just one of their last four fixtures, Leipzig now sit fourth in the league standings and are on course for a Champions League finish.
Possible return of a rising Leipzig star: Somebody who played a significant role in RBL securing all three points in the reverse fixture at the Red Bull Arena was youngster Assan Ouédraogo. The 19-year-old Germany youth international produced a stunning strike in the 64th minute last time around to put his side ahead on the night. He’s missed the last few months through a knee injury, although Ole Werner could finally be able to call on the starlet once again this weekend as the Red Bulls head to the Weser. With his comeback just around the corner, the Green-Whites will at least know just what to expect should he make an appearance on Saturday.
Match officials: Robert Hartmann will take charge of Werder Bremen’s Bundesliga home clash with RB Leipzig. He’ll be assisted by Christian Bandurski and Tobias Schultes on the touchlines, with Timo Gansloweit acting as the fourth official. Should any clear errors and obvious errors occur in the game, Guido Winkmann and Franz Bokop are on hand as the designated VAR.
