SV Werder Bremen have made a change to their squad-planning setup. Markus Pilawa has been appointed the club’s new head of squad planning and transfer strategy, with Johannes Jahns relieved of his duties. Clemens Fritz, managing director for sport at Werder Bremen, announced the news on Sunday.

“We’re very pleased to have been able to bring Markus on board at Werder. He brings significant expertise, experience and an extensive network from his time at FC Bayern and Borussia Dortmund. We’re convinced that he will bring fresh ideas to our scouting and squad-planning work. With Markus, we want to build on the strategic changes we began making last year. The aim is to put together a squad with a good mix of talented young players who can develop further and more experienced players. Markus will start his new role next Wednesday,” explained Clemens Fritz.

“Following our end-of-season review, we made the decision to change the leadership of this department. We would like to thank Johannes for his commitment over the past few years. He is very well liked and respected throughout the club. He showed great dedication and professionalism in his work for Werder. In recent weeks in particular, which were not easy for the club or for him personally, he remained fully committed to Werder. We wish him all the very best for the future,” added Clemens Fritz.

Markus Pilawa began his career as a scout at VfL Bochum in 2004 before joining Borussia Dortmund in 2012 and was appointed chief scout there at the start of 2017. He held the same role at FC Bayern from 2022 to 2024.
