Werder fall to final day defeat against BVB
MATCH REPORT FOLLOWING THE HOME GAME AGAINST BORUSSIA DORTMUND
16/05/26
)
SV Werder Bremen are heading into the summer break without having added to their points tally. In front of 41,800 spectators at a sold-out Weserstadion, the Green-Whites brought the 2025/26 Bundesliga season to a close with a 2-0 defeat to Borussia Dortmund. As always, the final matchday of the Bundesliga campaign was also marked by farewells.
FIRST-HALF HIGHLIGHTSBackhaus shines, Pieper in an offside position
Head coach Thioune kept his promise from the pre-match press conference and handed youngster Musah another start. Coulibaly and Schmidt also returned to the squad, with the latter bidding Bremen farewell before kick-off alongside Leonardo Bittencourt and others. However, the focus early on was firmly on goalkeeper Backhaus, who first denied Guirassy after a turnover in possession before producing a sensational save to keep out Inacio’s rebound (6’). Just a minute later, Werder’s number 30 was called into action again, tipping another Guirassy effort over the bar with one hand (7’).
Dortmund continued to control proceedings afterwards, though Werder also threatened at the other end. After Musah did well to hold up the ball, Deman’s chipped delivery into the six-yard box failed to find a teammate (19’). Later on, Pieper did manage to head a Puertas free-kick delivery over the line, but the defender was in an offside position when the ball was played in (28’). Njinmah then fired wide after getting on the end of a long ball from Stage (31’).
At the other end, Inacio burst to the byline and drilled the ball across the six-yard box. Backhaus got his fingertips to the delivery, meaning Guirassy missed the ball completely with the goal at his mercy (32’). Werder were gifted a similar chance moments later when Anton’s headed backpass fell short, but the angle proved too tight for Musah to round the onrushing Kobel (33’).

SECOND-HALF HIGHLIGHTSGuirassy strikes after spell of pressure, Coulibaly goal ruled out
Dortmund created the first big chance of the second half within seconds of the restart. Inacio picked out Guirassy, but Coulibaly stretched out a crucial leg to prevent the striker from getting a clean effort away and spared Backhaus from having to intervene (46’). The visitors continued to push for the opener: Friedl blocked a Nmecha strike from the edge of the box and the ball went out for a corner (51’), before Backhaus denied Guirassy from close range following the resulting set-piece (52’). Moments later, another dangerous delivery from the lively Inacio sailed onto the roof of the net (54’).
BVB eventually got their reward for such a sustained spell of pressure. Ryerson’s cross found Guirassy inside the six-yard box, and the striker muscled his way through before heading the ball over the line (59’). Werder looked for an immediate response afterwards. Musah used his physicality well to tee up both Stage (61’) and Schmid (68’), but their efforts were blocked by Dortmund defenders.
Werder continued to push forward but lacked the necessary luck in front of goal. Coulibaly thought he had equalised following a corner, only for the goal to be ruled out because Stage had been offside in the build-up (82’). Shortly afterwards, Kobel produced a fine one-handed save to tip Mbangula’s effort past the post (84’). Deep into stoppage time, Dortmund wrapped things up on the counter-attack, with substitute Couto applying the finishing touch (90+5’).
Werder therefore finish the 2025/26 season in 15th place, while Dortmund had already secured the runners-up spot before kick-off.
