Werder Bremen have completed another signing ahead of the new season, bringing in Cedric Itten from Fortuna Düsseldorf. The 29-year-old Switzerland international joins the Green-Whites on a free transfer, as confirmed by Peter Niemeyer, head of professional football at Werder Bremen, on Sunday.
“Cedric fits the profile we were looking for perfectly. At 29, he has a wealth of experience from both his club career and international football with Switzerland. His qualities will be a real asset to the team,” said Niemeyer.
Daniel Thioune is also delighted with the new arrival. “I know Cedric from our time together in Düsseldorf. He is a tall, powerful centre-forward who can hold the ball up and knows where the goal is. His qualities will give us more options in attack.”
Itten is equally excited about the move. “Werder are a huge club with a proud history, and my talks with the club went really well. I also had a great conversation with the coach, who I already know from our time together in Düsseldorf. It quickly became clear to me that this was a move I wanted to make. I also spoke to some teammates who have played here before. Everything I heard sounded really positive, and I’m delighted to be a Werder Bremen player. I can’t wait to play my first game at the Weserstadion.”
The 16-time Switzerland international, who has scored five goals for his country, came through the ranks at FC Basel. After spells with Luzern, St. Gallen, Rangers, Greuther Fürth and Young Boys, he joined Düsseldorf, scoring 16 goals in 32 competitive appearances.
