SV Werder Bremen have extended full-back Mitchell Weiser’s contract, which was due to expire on 30th June. The Green-Whites have reached an agreement with the 32-year-old to keep him at the club, as announced by Peter Niemeyer, head of professional football at Werder Bremen, on Saturday.
“We’re delighted that Mitchell will be staying with us. We’ve lost none of our belief in what he can bring to the team, and are optimistic that Mitch will be able to help us with his creativity in the new season once he’s back from his knee injury,” explained Peter Niemeyer.
Head coach Daniel Thioune is also pleased that the full-back is staying. “For me, Mitch is almost like a new signing. We hope he comes back from his injury in top shape. There’s no question about the quality he has as a player and he will be a real asset to our team.”
Pre-season this summer gives Mitchell Weiser the chance to make a fresh start after his ACL injury. “I’m really looking forward to the new season and that I’ll be staying at Werder. I can’t wait to be back out on the pitch and I’ll do everything I can to help us play attractive and successful football. I’m looking forward to playing in front of the fans again. I really missed that last season.”
Mitchell Weiser initially joined Werder Bremen on loan from Bayer Leverkusen in 2021, before making the move permanent a year later. The 32-year-old has made 123 competitive appearances so far, scoring 14 goals and setting up a further 29. He did not feature for Werder last season after suffering an ACL injury during pre-season.
