Master the basics and pick up points
MATCH PREVIEW AHEAD OF THE GAME AWAY AT VFL WOLFSBURG
20/03/26
)
SV Werder Bremen are back in action on Saturday, 21st March, as they play away at VfL Wolfsburg with the ball set to roll at 15:30 CET. The game against VfL could prove crucial in this years race for survival, with both sides surely eying up a huge opportunity to score points against a relegation rival.
Latest squad news: Senne Lynen (adductor issues) will be unavailable for SVW’s clash against VfL Wolfsburg, head coach Daniel Thioune announced in his press conference ahead of the match against the Wolves. Jens Stage will also be absent as he serves a one-game suspension for yellow-card accumulation. Karl Hein suffered a hand injury in training, and so will also miss the trip. Jovan Milošević (back problems), Maximilian Wöber (muscle problems), Amos Pieper (minor procedure) and Wesley Adeh (ligament tear) are all still unfit to play. Julian Malatini, who sustained a syndesmosis ligament tear against Mainz and underwent surgery successfully on Wednesday, is also unavailable. Mitchell Weiser (cruciate ligament tear) and Victor Boniface (knee surgery) are still sidelined with long-term injuries.
Head coach Daniel Thioune on the opponent: "Even though Dieter Hecking hasn’t been there too long at this point, I think that his experience and the situations he’s been in before mean he’s well equipped to prepare this side in a way that sees them end the season successfully. I would also say, though, that we have a massive chance with this game. I think that it will all come down to the basics this weekend. Both teams are fighting to keep their place in the league, but both teams also know how to play good football."
Previous encounters: With a dramatic late winner at the Weserstadion, Werder secured an important 2-1 victory in the reverse fixture against Wolfsburg in Bremen. After Jens Stage levelled the affair in the 83rd minute, Samuel Mbangula struck with practically the final kick of the game to seal the win. It’s also worth looking back at the most recent fixture in Wolfsburg: last season, the Green-Whites ran out 4–2 winners away at VfL. Marco Grüll, Marvin Ducksch, Felix Agu and Mitchell Weiser all wrote their names onto the scoresheet that day.

Troubling times for VfL: Wolfsburg are now without a win in nine Bundesliga matches and have taken just 21 points from 26 games this season. Before 2025/26, they had never previously had fewer than 25 points at this stage. In the era of the three-points-for-a-win rule, only three teams have ever had exactly 21 points after 26 matchdays – all were in 17th place, as Wolfsburg are now, and all three were relegated at the end of the season (St. Pauli 2001/02, Duisburg 2005/06 and Schalke 2022/23).
Match Officials: Benjamin Brand will lead the officiating team for Saturday’s game. He will be assisted by Thomas Stein and Dr Martin Thomsen on the touchlines, while Florian Lechner will act as the fourth official. Pascal Müller and Markus Sinn will oversee proceedings from the VAR hub.
