Oskar Wójcik is unlikely to forget his 23rd birthday in a hurry. The Polish defender is currently away at his first training camp with SV Werder in Zillertal. Between the two sessions on day two in Zell am Ziller, the summer signing sat down with journalists at the MalisGarten and spoke about...
...his birthday: “It was actually a pretty normal day. I woke up, went to training and then the team gave me a cake before lunch. But I’m here to work, not to celebrate my birthday.”
...his first impressions of Bremen: “Bremen is a quiet city, which is nice for me because that’s what I like. The stadium is great and the training pitches are good. I’m very happy to be here. My girlfriend is here with me and my family will come to the games as often as they can.”
...his first German words: “Dankeschön, bitte, natürlich, genau. I’m learning a little more of the language every day. And of course, I already know what Moin means.”
...why he chose Werder: “When I heard Werder were interested in me, I started finding out more about the club. But I’d already heard a lot about the fans and the club’s history before then. Last season didn’t go so well, and the coach, the team and I all want to do better. When Werder’s representatives came to Poland to speak to me, I knew I wanted to join the club.”
...his style of play: “I always give 100% on the pitch. I like playing a physical style of football – that’s what defenders do. I played alongside Kamil Glik in Poland and he helped me a lot with that. I enjoy individual battles with strikers. That’s why I think the Bundesliga suits me, because teams press high and there are a lot of one-on-one situations.”
)
...the competition for places: “We obviously have a lot of centre-backs and that doesn’t make things easy. But that’s football. If it were easy, we wouldn’t need to train. The competition just helps all of us to improve every day.”
...Robert Lewandowski: “He’s the greatest player in Polish football history and one of the best strikers in the world. It was always my dream to play alongside the very best, so it was an honour to share the pitch with him.”
...making an immediate impact: “I’m ready and I don’t feel any pressure. I want to play every game, go out there and give everything for the club. Of course, there are still plenty of things I can improve. I can get better on the ball and keep working on my weaker foot."
...his hobbies: “I really like darts and eSports. But I also enjoy relaxing with my family and my girlfriend. I’m a calm, happy person and I like to have a laugh.”
