SV Werder kicked off the 2026/27 season with a victory! In front of more than 5,000 fans at the Stadion am Berliner Ring, the Green-Whites beat Oberliga side FC Verden 04 6-2 in their first pre-season friendly. Wójcik, Chuki and Quetant all made their Werder debuts, with the latter also scoring his first goal for the club.
FIRST-HALF HIGHLIGHTSNjinmah scores Werder’s first goal of the season
Werder were without the players yet to return following the World Cup, as well as those who had been away at the U19 European Championship. Weiser and Malatini, who are both yet to return to team training, were also unavailable. Lynen (abdominal muscle issue), Agu (muscular problem), Stalmach (rested as a precaution following knee problems) and Alvero (ill) also missed out. New signing Wójcik, meanwhile, made his first start for the club. The first chance fell to the Oberliga hosts, however, with Röpe getting a shot away following a corner. Goalkeeper Hein was alert and made a one-handed save (1’).
Werder then took control as expected. Centre-forward Musah nicked the ball off FCV goalkeeper Rodel just outside his penalty area, leaving Njinmah with an empty net to roll the ball into (16’). Despite Werder dominating possession and enjoying the better of the play, the lead lasted only a few minutes. Verden again threatened from a set piece, with Röpe equalising in a crowded penalty area (20’).
Werder kept up the pressure and their attacking intent was rewarded with three more goals before the break. Stage turned the ball home after unselfish work from Musah (25’), before the youngster claimed his third assist of the afternoon just moments later. This time, Njinmah found a way past the defenders stationed on the goal line (32’). A blocked Musah effort then fell kindly to Stage, who once again had a simple finish from close range (36’).

SECOND-HALF HIGHLIGHTSChuki hits the post, Quetant opens his account
Both sides made almost wholesale changes after the break, with only Heitmann and Höcker staying on for Werder. Goalkeeper Kolke was called into action when he produced a one-handed save to tip Albrecht’s curling effort over the bar (53’). At the other end, Erevbenagie dribbled his way to the byline but was unable to find a team-mate in the six-yard box, with Hamouda unable to make a telling contact (57’). Six minutes later, Erevbenagie slid onto Soylu’s low cross to make it 5-1 (63’).
The Green-Whites continued to dictate proceedings and went close to another. Chuki stepped up to take a free-kick from a central position and curled his effort against the outside of the post (68’). Shortly afterwards, Soylu fired over from Coulibaly’s lay-off (71’). Grüll’s cross into the middle picked out his new team-mate Quetant, who met the ball first time and volleyed it under the crossbar for Werder’s sixth (83’).
Verden had the final say, with Wortmann converting a penalty to make the final score 6-2 to Werder (88’). SVW will head to their training camp in the Zillertal on Monday, 20th July 2026. Daniel Thioune’s side will face Fagiano Okayama there on Wednesday, 22nd July (17:30 CEST), before taking on VfL Bochum on Saturday, 25th July (13:00 CEST).
