Matchday 23 of the Bundesliga sees SV Werder Bremen travel to the Millerntor-Stadion on Sunday, 22nd February (17:30 CET). The clash with FC St. Pauli marks the start of a crucial run of games for Werder.

Team news: Head coach Daniel Thioune will be without six players. The trip to St. Pauli comes too soon for Karim Coulibaly. Maximilian Wöber (muscular problems), Amos Pieper (minor surgical procedure) and Wesley Adeh (ligament tear) are also unavailable, along with long-term absentees Mitchell Weiser (cruciate ligament tear) and Victor Boniface (knee surgery).

Head coach Daniel Thioune on the opposition: “Despite their long run of poor results, they never strayed from staying true to themselves and continued to play their game. However, they are experiencing some of the same issues that we are. They haven’t scored many goals, but remain a constant threat. That’s why we will need to be prepared to cause problems for them and to play our game. If we manage to create space for ourselves and play with intensity, then we will definitely be able to make things tough for them.”

Recent meetings: Since St. Pauli’s promotion back to the Bundesliga, Werder remain unbeaten against the Kiezkicker and have yet to concede against them. In the reverse fixture, Samuel Mbangula made the difference with an early goal in a 1-0 win. Overall, Werder have won nine of the last 10 top-flight meetings. St. Pauli’s only Bundesliga victory in this fixture came in the very first encounter back in August 1977.

Hunting for goals: Werder need a win – and the confidence that comes with scoring. The Green-Whites have failed to find the net in five of their last seven Bundesliga matches. The fact St. Pauli have conceded the most big chances in the league (42) could offer an opening for Werder to rediscover their cutting edge in front of goal.

Yellow-card suspensions looming: Following the 3-0 defeat against FC Bayern München, Daniel Thioune made no secret of the fact that top scorer Jens Stage’s relatively early substitution was also linked to his four yellow cards. Alongside the Dane, Cameron Puertas, Marco Grüll and Romano Schmid are also one booking away from a suspension.

The officials: Sören Storks will referee Werder’s match at FC St. Pauli on Sunday, as he did in the reverse fixture. Thorben Siewer and Philipp Hüwe will serve as his assistants, with Florian Lechner as the fourth official. Pascal Müller and Markus Sinn will be on VAR duty.
