It’s now official. Iván San José Cantalejo, known as Chuki, has become the Green-Whites’ latest permanent signing ahead of the 2026/27 season. The 22-year-old joins Werder from Real Valladolid, as Peter Niemeyer, head of professional football, announced on Tuesday.
“Chuki is a really exciting player who already has experience in Spain’s top two divisions at a young age. He is an attacking midfielder with a lot of potential, and we want to help him make the most of that potential here at Werder,” said Niemeyer.
Werder head coach Daniel Thioune is looking forward to welcoming the former Spain youth international at the start of pre-season. “We’re delighted to have brought Chuki to Werder. He’s an excellent footballer who has mainly played centrally in attacking midfield, but can also operate out wide. He has a good return in La Liga 2 this season, with 15 goal involvements in 34 appearances. I’m sure his qualities will help us.”
For Chuki, moving from his hometown of Valladolid to Germany is a big step, but one he is hugely excited about. “I’m happy and confident that Werder is the best possible club for me and the right step in my career. I’m grateful for the trust being shown in me and hope I can help the club continue to develop. It was a very carefully considered decision. It was difficult to leave Real Valladolid – the club where I came through – because I grew up there, in my city, and I will always be incredibly grateful to them.”
Chuki made 55 competitive appearances for Real Valladolid’s first team, scoring nine goals.
