Romano Schmid joins Frosinone Calcio

SV Werder Bremen will be without midfielder Romano Schmid during the upcoming season. The Austria international has left the Green-Whites to join newly promoted Serie A side Frosinone Calcio.
“Romano is leaving us having become one of the key figures in our team over the past few years. He developed into an established Bundesliga player and Austria international in Bremen and formed a real connection with the club, the city and the fans. However, Frosinone Calcio made an offer that meets both our financial interests and Romano’s own wishes. We wish him all the very best, both on and off the pitch, as he takes this next step in his career in Italy,” said managing director for sport Clemens Fritz.
“So much has happened over all these years. Relegation, promotion. I’ve grown into someone who represents his national side, I’ve played at the European Championship and the World Cup. My first son was born here in Bremen. My family and I feel like we’re truly at home here. I’ll always look back on my time in Bremen as one of the most important periods in my life. Now, there’s the chance to play in a country that I’ve always dreamed of being in. I wish Werder, everyone who works at the club and all the fans all the best for the future,” said Romano Schmid.
Romano Schmid signed his first contract with Werder in January 2019 before joining Wolfsberger AC on loan. He spent a season and a half with the Austrian side. Schmid made his Bundesliga debut for SV Werder in December 2020. The 26-year-old went on to make 192 competitive appearances for Werder, scoring 18 goals. He won promotion to the Bundesliga with Werder in 2022 and made his senior Austria debut a few months later. Schmid represented his country at the 2026 World Cup, scoring the opener in Austria’s 3-1 group-stage win over Jordan.
