Werder twice lead but cannot see off Paderborn

SV Werder had to settle for a draw in their fifth friendly of pre-season. The Green-Whites played out a 2-2 draw with fellow Bundesliga side SC Paderborn 07 over four 35-minute periods in front of 2,400 spectators at the Stadion am Oyther Berg.
FIRST HALFNjinmah denied the opener, Hein keeps Paderborn at bay
Head coach Daniel Thioune was without 12 players for the game, with Lynen, Topp, Weiser, Stark, Stalmach, Heitmann and Agu all continuing their rehabilitation, Schmid, Coulibaly and Kownacki having their workloads managed, Alvero absent for personal reasons and Musah missing through illness. Summer signing Cedric Itten did start, however, to make his Werder debut. Paderborn began the stronger of the two sides. Obermair curled an effort well wide (4’), before goalkeeper Hein was called into action to deny Millgramm (8’) and Batista Meier (15’) from promising positions.
The Green-Whites then began to find their way into the game and created the best chance of the opening period. After winning possession high up the pitch, Grüll fired a left-footed shot towards goal, but Noll got one hand to it to tip the ball over the bar (17’). Werder went even closer shortly afterwards when Njinmah beat the opposing goalkeeper, only for a defender to clear the ball off the line (22’).
Following the first brief interval after 35 minutes, Paderborn were back on top. Marino met a cross inside the five-yard box, but Hein tipped his effort onto the bar (49’). Just two minutes later, ter Horst found space in a central position but sent his shot over (51’). Hein was called upon again shortly before half time, keeping out an effort from Obermair (68’).

SECOND HALFGrüll gets to the byline and Njinmah turns home
While Werder made just a handful of changes, newly promoted Paderborn changed their entire XI. Substitute Tigges was first to threaten when he met a corner with a header, but Schlager was alert to make the save (80’). Down the other end, Grüll powered his way to the byline and picked out Njinmah, who directed the ball into the net from close range to hand Werder the lead (81’).
Paderborn continued to carry the greater threat in front of goal, nonetheless. Tigges again tested Schlager with another effort (85’), before forcing the Austrian into action once more with a powerful left-footed strike. Schlager also kept out Okpala’s follow-up (110’). In between, Soylu had produced a dangerous run of his own for Werder, but slipped as he attempted a left-footed shot (97’).
Čović signalled the start of a frantic finish with a long-range effort that Schubert kept out (117’). The goals then began to flow, with Tigges picking out the advancing Müller to make it 1-1 (123’). The Green-Whites responded quickly as Erevbenagie found himself through on Schubert and calmly slotted home (128’). Paderborn had the final say, though, as Lasse Eickel equalised to make it 2-2 (130’).
Werder will head to Klosterpforte on Monday (10.08.) for their second training camp of the summer. The week will then conclude with a final friendly against French top-flight side AJ Auxerre during Fans’ Day (15.08.).
