Niclas Füllkrug left Bremen having finished the season as the Bundesliga’s top goalscorer and established himself as a Germany international. Three years later, the 33-year-old is back at Werder. Füllkrug has joined the Green-Whites on a season-long loan from West Ham United and will bolster Werder’s attacking options, as head of professional football Peter Niemeyer confirmed on Tuesday.
“We’re delighted to have been able to bring Niclas back to the club. Fülle made it very clear that he wanted to return to Werder. He knows the Bundesliga inside out and is someone who can make an immediate impact for us. We know that the last two years haven’t gone quite as he would have hoped, but we firmly believe he can enjoy a successful spell back at Werder,” said Peter Niemeyer.
Head coach Daniel Thioune is also delighted with the new arrival: “Niclas is an out-and-out goalscorer. He’s physically strong, excellent in the air, comfortable on the ball and can hold it up too. He’ll definitely add another dimension to our game. He’s also a real leader who sets the tone both on and off the pitch. He still knows quite a few of the players from his last spell at Werder, as well as members of the staff, so it shouldn’t take him long to settle back in.”
Fülle is back!
Returning to Werder also means a great deal personally to Füllkrug. “I’ve never made any secret of the fact that Werder is a very special club to me. That’s why I was also prepared to make financial sacrifices to make the loan happen. It was important to me to play for Werder again. I had some really good conversations with the club and I’m really looking forward to being back in Bremen and playing in the Bundesliga again.”
Niclas Füllkrug came through Werder’s academy and made his breakthrough as a Bundesliga player in Bremen. After spells with Fürth, Nürnberg and Hannover, Fülle returned to the Green-Whites in 2019 before joining Borussia Dortmund three years ago. He subsequently moved to West Ham United and spent the second half of last season on loan at AC Milan. Füllkrug has played for Germany at both the 2022 FIFA World Cup and UEFA EURO 2024, scoring 14 goals in 24 international appearances. The 33-year-old has also played 157 Bundesliga games to date, scoring 56 goals, as well as making 135 appearances and contributing 47 goals in Bundesliga 2.
