Marco Friedl will once again captain SV Werder Bremen during the 2026/27 season, as confirmed by head coach Daniel Thioune on Thursday afternoon.
“Marco Friedl is, and will remain, our team captain. We sat down together to define what our expectations look like. He has filled the role in a very responsible and trustworthy manner over the last years. I shared a few additional things with him that I would like to see from him as our captain. That’s why it is a good decision for us,” Thioune explained.
The 28-year-old is heading into his ninth season with the Green-White, while it will be the fifth straight year in which he has led the team as captain.
Thioune also shared that the team council for the 2026/27 season will look a little different than in previous years. “I will announce our two vice-captains on 31st August. In my opinion, the team council is a bit overrated at the moment. Instead, I can see myself establishing a leadership group instead. I don’t want to limit this to four, five or six players, but will instead take the lads aside personally. Marco will remain the first point of contact, though, and the other two will support him.”
