SV Werder Bremen have booked their place in the second round of the DFB-Pokal. In front of a sold-out crowd of 29,330 at the Millerntor-Stadion, the Green-Whites beat Oberliga side Lüneburger Sport-Klub Hansa 3-0. Two new signings marked their debuts with goals in the Saturday afternoon affair.
FIRST-HALF HIGHLIGHTSStage heads home, Füllkrug narrowly over
With goalkeeper Hein unavailable for SVW, Schlager made his competitive debut. Alongside him, two other summer arrivals, Füllkrug and Reis, also started. Reis came close to opening his Werder account within seconds of kick-off. Stage found the new signing in a promising position in the box, where the Dutchman sent his header narrowly over the crossbar (1').
Thioune’s side eventually took the lead from a set piece. Deman delivered into the box, where Stage rose to head home from close range (11'). Just two minutes later, another corner almost brought a second. This time Mbangula provided the delivery, but Füllkrug's header whistled just over the bar (13').
Werder continued to control proceedings, although they were unable to create many further clear-cut chances. Lynen's long-range effort flew over the frame of the goal (31'), while LSK goalkeeper Exner got to the ball ahead of Stage after Füllkrug's knockdown (33') and then saved another effort from Njinmah (38'). When Deman struck a right-footed effort from the edge of the box, Exner was there once again to deny him (45+1').

SECOND-HALF HIGHLIGHTSFüllkrug and Reis open their Werder accounts
After the restart, Thioune introduced Chuki and Erevbenagie, injecting plenty of energy into the game. Following an impressive dribble into the box, the latter teed up the former, whose deflected effort narrowly missed the far corner (51'). Just a minute later, Stage pressed brilliantly to win the ball high up the pitch, and was subsequently brought down in the area by LSK defender Muhlack. Füllkrug stepped up to convert the resulting penalty, marking his first competitive game back in Green and White with a goal to make it 2-0 (53').
Werder continued to create promising chances, but initially failed to turn them into more goals. Itten set up Njinmah, whose delicate chip was cleared off the line by Muhlack (64'). Following a slick transition, Itten himself came close, seeing his volley take a deflection and fly narrowly over the bar (72'). The resulting corner was played short and found Pieper, whose header just missed the target (73').
At the other end, Scheuer produced the hosts' first dangerous effort from distance, narrowly missing the far post (74'). The chance served as a warning for Werder, but Reis put the game beyond doubt just two minutes later, finding the back of the net from the edge of the box to score his first goal for the club (76'). Itten then came close to adding a fourth, his header clipping the top of the crossbar (80').
After a successful start to their competitive campaign, SVW travel to SC Freiburg on Sunday, 30th August, for the opening matchday of the Bundesliga. Kick-off is at 15:30 CEST.
