SV Werder Bremen now know where their first competitive game of the 2026/27 season will take them, with the Green-Whites set to visit Lüneburger SK Hansa in the first round of the DFB-Pokal. The draw was made on Saturday evening.

LSK Hansa finished sixth in the fifth-tier Oberliga Niedersachsen in the 2025/26 season. With he club newly founded in 2008, the Green-Whites have never faced them before in a competitive fixture. SVW have only ever played against their predecessor club, Lüneburger SK, beating them comfortably in both Oberliga Nord meetings in the 1951/52 season (10-0, 9-1). Werder’s U23s have more experience against the side now coached by Tarek Gibbah, having faced Lüneburg eight times in the Regionalliga Nord, recording five wins, two draws and one defeat.

As usual, the draw took place at the German Football Museum in Dortmund. DFB vice-president Peter Frymuth oversaw proceedings, with Deniz Aytekin drawing the ties. The first round of the DFB-Pokal will be played from Friday, 21st August 2026, to Monday, 24th August 2026 with exact timings to follow soon.

Reaction to the draw

Clemens Fritz, managing director for sport: “I’m pleased with the draw. It’s a short trip for us and I’m sure we’ll have plenty of Werder fans there at the game. Our aim is obviously to come through the tie and reach the second round.”

Head coach Daniel Thioune: “It’s a special game for me because I have family ties to Lüneburg. We’ll take the match very seriously because I know from my own experience that games like this are always the match of the year for the underdogs. At the same time, our clear aim is obviously to get through to the next round.”
