Austria will head to the World Cup in positive spirits. Ralf Rangnick’s side won their final warm-up match before the tournament in Canada, Mexico and the USA, beating Tunisia 1-0.

Romano Schmid started the game and was substituted at half time, while Marco Friedl came on at the start of the second half. Werder’s captain was therefore on the pitch to see Dortmund’s Marcel Sabitzer score the winner in the 63rd minute. Rangnick’s side begin their World Cup campaign against Jordan (17th June, 06:00 CEST, Santa Clara).

Yukinari Sugawara was in action for Japan on Sunday. The Japanese national team also recorded the narrowest of wins, beating Iceland 1-0. The Werder loanee was brought on at the start of the second half. Sugawara and Japan will face the Netherlands in their opening group game (14th June, 22:00 CEST, Dallas).

Serbia faced Cape Verde on Sunday. Jovan Milošević played the first half of their 3-0 defeat. Later this week, Serbia, who are not taking part in the World Cup, will play another friendly against tournament hosts Mexico (5th June).

Jens Stage and Denmark also have two fixtures coming up in the next few days. They first face DR Congo (3rd June, 20:00 CEST), before taking on Ukraine a few days later (7th June, 18:30 CEST). Karl Hein is taking part in the Baltic Cup with Estonia, where a semi-final against the Faroe Islands (6th June) could be followed by a final against Lithuania or Latvia.

Stefan Smarkalev made his debut for Bulgaria U21s at the weekend. The 19-year-old goalkeeper was called up to this age group for the first time and came on in the 1-0 win against North Macedonia.
