The final training session in Zillertal is done. As Karl Hein joined WERDER.TV for a chat, the Estonian goalkeeper was still slightly out of breath. Goalkeeping coach Christian Vander had kept his group out for a little longer than the outfield players for some additional individual work. Hein is now looking ahead to what could be his first season as Werder’s first-choice goalkeeper.
At 318 metres above sea level, Suur Munamägi is the highest point in Estonia, so the mountain scenery in Zillertal is somewhat different to what Hein is used to back home. “It’s really beautiful here. The smallest mountain is probably 300 metres high,” joked the 24-year-old. “It’s so cool to train in front of so many fans with a view like this.”
Following Mio Backhaus’ move to SC Freiburg, Werder exercised their option to sign the Estonia international permanently. Hein will be hoping to establish himself as Werder’s first-choice goalkeeper, with Alexander Schlager providing strong competition. “I don’t feel any extra pressure,” said Hein. “The coach decides who plays. I give my best every day to be ready for whatever comes.”
