SV Werder Bremen capped off Bundesliga matchday 25 in style with a sensational 4-1 win away at 1. FC Union Berlin, their second win on the road in 2025/26. The Green-Whites came back from an early deficit to leave the capital with another crucial three points, playing most of the game with a man advantage following a 19th-minute red card for FCU midfielder Schäfer.

FIRST-HALF HIGHLIGHTSUNION OPEN THE SCORING, THIOUNE'S BOYS TURN IT ROUND

In comparison to the XI that began the 2-0 win over 1. FC Heidenheim, head coach Daniel Thioune lined up his side with one. Jovan Milošević was unable to recover from the back contusion he suffered last week in time to start, meaning Keke Topp led the line. It was clear even in the early stages of the game that the Green-Whites would have a challenge on their hands to contend with the physicality of the Berlin side. Stark held Ansah back in the box and referee Gerach pointed to the spot – it was former Werder defender Köhn who stepped up and confidently converted the penalty (18’).

The hosts’ joy was short-lived, however, as Schäfer was shown a straight red card for a stamp on Stage just a minute later (19’). Werder immediately pushed for the equaliser, but Rønnow clawed a left-footed effort from compatriot Stage off the line (22’), while Sugawara ended up leaning back too far with his attempt from ten yards out – the full-back’s effort blazed high over the bar (24’).

Eventually, Werder took their chance, capitalising on a poor Union clearance following a set-piece. The ball fell to Deman, who curled an absolute screamer into the top left corner (31’). That seemingly wasn’t enough for Werder, though, as another Puertas corner found the head of Stage, who nodded home his seventh goal of the season – the comeback was complete (35’). Shortly before the break, Puertas narrowly missed a chance for a third with another curling effort (44’).

SECOND-HALF HIGHLIGHTSWERDER DOMINATE AND SEE OUT THE THREE POINTS

Werder kept the pressure high after the restart and immediately created the next set of clear-cut chances. Stage looked perfectly positioned to grab his brace, but the Dane saw his effort strike the inside of the post and rebound out (50’). Shortly afterwards, substitute Leonardo Bittencourt tried his luck from distance (51’), while Marco Grüll found no takers in the middle after dribbling to the byline (52’).

Overall, it was a commanding performance from Thioune’s side, who remained proactive, used their numerical advantage well and pushed for a third goal. The hosts’ back line then lent a helping hand, somewhat clumsily laying the ball into Schmid’s path. The Austrian showed great vision to square the ball to his Austria teammate Grüll, who bundled it over the line while falling over in a tangle with an Union defender (66’). They all count the same!

In the closing stages, the Berlin side threw everything forward, forcing the Green-Whites to put their bodies on the line once more. Eventually, it was substitute Čović who sealed the result in stoppage time, the Berlin-born forward scoring his first Bundesliga goal to put the game beyond doubt (90+4’).
