SV Werder Bremen have won the Nordderby! On matchday 30 of this current Bundesliga season, the Green-Whites put on quite the show for 41,800 supporters at a sold-out Weserstadion, recording a 3-1 victory over arch-rivals Hamburger SV. Jens Stage bagged a brace for SVW, before Cameron Puertas sealed the three points with his first goal in Green and White.

FIRST-HALF HIGHLIGHTSStage heads home, glatzel levels before long

Compared to the line-up that began the game away at 1. FC Köln, head coach Daniel Thioune – who had to make do without his suspended captain Marco Friedl among others – made four changes to his starting XI, with Jens Stage, Karim Coulibaly, Cameron Puertas and Jovan Milošević all coming in. Werder settled quickly and saw plenty of the ball early on, but it was the Rothosen who registered the first attempt: Muheim’s free-kick was glanced on by Remberg into the path of Glatzel, who just couldn’t apply the finishing touch at the back post (5').

The Green-Whites soon started to find their rhythm going forward. Schmid did well in the air to tee up Justin Njinmah’s run in behind, but the winger’s left-footed effort was too centrally placed to really test Heuer Fernandes (7'). Puertas then couldn’t quite get hold of his attempt a minute later (8'). The visitors thought they had gone ahead shortly afterwards when Glatzel forced the ball over the line, but the flag was already up, with Königsdörffer clearly offside as Viera’s free-kick was taken quickly (14').

Königsdörffer then had the best chance of the game up to that point, latching onto a long ball from Omari after Amos Pieper briefly lost his bearings, but he dragged his shot narrowly wide (26'). Down the other end, Werder made their first real opening count: Yukinari Sugawara delivered a lovely ball into the box and Stage met it with a powerful header from close range to make it 1-0 (38'). The lead didn’t last long, though. Glatzel battled his way past Coulibaly before drilling a fierce effort into the top corner to level things up (41').

SECOND-HALF HIGHLIGHTSStage WITH A SCREAMER, dramtic late scenes

After the break, Thioune’s side went in search of the lead they had briefly held earlier on. Stage rose to meet a Puertas cross, but couldn’t get enough power on his header to seriously trouble the goalkeeper (55'). Just moments later, though, the Dane had his reward. Picking the ball up in a central position, Werder’s vice-captain took aim and curled a brilliant effort into the top corner to make it 2-1 (57').

The goal changed the complexion of the game, with the visitors now forced to commit more men forward and take greater risks. Werder, for their part, looked to stay compact and wait for the right moment to strike on the counter. As the game moved into its closing stages, the Rothosen then made things even more difficult for themselves. Substitute Otele caught Puertas high on the shin with his studs up, and after being alerted by VAR, referee Dr. Exner showed a straight red card for serious foul play (79').

There was further drama late on when Jatta also found himself in trouble, but after reviewing the incident on the monitor, the referee opted to downgrade the punishment from a red card to a yellow (89'). Any lingering tension was short-lived, however. Just moments later, as the twelve minutes of added time got underway, Puertas combined neatly with Schmid before applying the finishing touch to put the result beyond any doubt (90+1’).

SV Werder Bremen not only celebrate a derby win, but also claim vital points in the fight for survival. Thioune’s side now head into a longer week of training, with matchday 31 seeing the Green-Whites travel to VfB Stuttgart for a 15:30 CEST kick-off on Sunday, 26th April.
