Time for our first reverse fixture of the campaign! After hitting the halfway mark of the season on Tuesday away at BVB, the focus in Bremen turns to the upcoming home match against Eintracht Frankfurt on Friday night, 16th January. A floodlit kick-off against the seventh-placed side is scheduled for 20:30 CET, with a whole stadium of Werder fans ready to spur the boys on.

The squad: The Green-Whites came out of the game in Dortmund unscathed by injuries, and so can rely on the same squad for the affair against Eintracht. Maximilian Wöber, Niklas Stark and Wesley Adeh all remain sidelined, as do those with long-term injuries in Mitchell Weiser (ACL tear), Felix Agu (Syndesmosis injury) and Victor Boniface (knee injury).

Head coach Horst Steffen on the opponent: “They’re a strong side. They’re in a good position, they have a lot of good players, and they’re very strong in front of goal. We need to produce a sharp display. Eintracht do have their issues, though, and we need to exploit that. At the end of the day, no matter who we’re up against, we have to focus on what’s required of us in each position. How are we working together? Are we sticking to the plan? That’s what I’m concentrating on, that we manage to find ways of succeeding against Frankfurt, that we have a win to celebrate when the final whistle goes and that we can finally feel that joy, that buzz again.”

Zetterer’s return: After his transfer in the summer, Michael Zetterer is heading back to the Weserstadion for the first time on Friday night. It will no doubt be a special moment for the shot-stopper, who donned the Werder jersey for ten years and ran out in 80 competitive games for SVW.

Previous encounters: Werder have the chance to match SGE’s number of wins across the history of this fixture in all competitions, should they be victorious on Friday. Werder have beaten Frankfurt 45 times in total, most recently at the Weserstadion last season. Goals from Oliver Burke and Romano Schmid were enough to dispatch the Eagles in April 2025 as Werder ran out 2-0 victors.

A good omen: Horst Steffen’s side are gearing up for their third Friday night game in Bremen so far this season. The Green-Whites have been successful in this electric atmosphere, seeing off both Union Berlin (1-0) and VfL Wolfsburg (2-1) under the lights of the Weserstadion.
