Werder head coach Daniel Thioune spoke in a press conference on Sunday, 2nd February, following the 1-0 defeat away to SC Freiburg. Along with leading training for those players who were not heavily involved in the game, the 51-year-old also answered questions from journalists about…

…takeaways from the Freiburg game: “The match had a very individual story. We somewhat overthought things after the red card for Freiburg, since the boys seemed to believe they had more to lose with the player advantage. That showed that this team is still a couple steps behind where it needs to be in order to get positive results once more.”

…confidence within the team: “The most significant factor is the run of winless games, which has an effect on the lads. We are fully aware of the situation we find ourselves in and assume that it might be and will be a fight until the end. When we can finally get some ketchup out the bottle again, when we score a goal and sure things up at the back, the ease will then return.”

…the attacking display: “Everyone plays football to score goals. We need to look at things on a smaller scale, at the one-on-ones. Every player needs to win their individual battles out on the football pitch, both up top and in defence. If you are successful at either end, then the confidence grows. The boys know that they have it in them.”

…the formation: “We decided yesterday to stick with the back three for the sake of reliability. We did not play worse than our opponent but just weren’t at it in the decisive moments. The thing that told was how sharp the two teams were in either box. The group needs to learn from that and be better in that regard. It may be the case in the future that things change, and the lads need to be flexible.”

…the approach over the course of the next few weeks: “I reiterated to the boys that they should see it as if I am carrying an empty rucksack into which they should toss all their burdens. I want to instil them with a positive feeling and clear their heads. However, I also need to implement certain content and focus on what lies ahead of us. I can definitely then work in more ideas in the coming days as was possible during the brief preparation this past week.”

…the upcoming fixture against FC Bayern München: “Our aim for the contest needs to be to operate in a way that ensures the game does not become a walk in the park for Bayern. It is obviously a tough task but, in football, anything is possible!”
