His first assignment in a Werder jersey was a pretty nerve-wracking one. Leonardo Bittencourt was at the centre of the duel with Union Berlin and not least in the closing stages. With a fierce, passionate performance, the native Leipziger made a good impression on the Werder fans in front of whom he will contest his first home game next weekend. In an interview, Bittencourt looks back on his debut, the personal battle with Neven Subotic and the next encounter with the "Red Bulls" from his hometown.

Werder: It was a spectacular first game for Werder: how satisfied are you with your performance and how did you find it playing with your new teammates?

Leonardo Bittencourt: "I am very satisfied because we worked hard for the victory. The attitude of the team made me very proud, because it was not an easy game, even though you’re supposed to get the points away at newly-promoted sides like Union. The Union players feed off their adrenalin and have played really well in the Bundesliga so far. We’ve had a bumpy start and so it was very important to get the three points heading in to the next few weeks. "

Werder: On Saturday you will play at the wohninvest WESERSTADION for the first time. How much are you looking forward to it?

Leonardo Bittencourt: "I'm really looking forward to the home game in Bremen. It has always been very loud and it’s never been easy to play here as an opponent so it's nice to be on the other side now. "

Werder: Leipzig are a top team. We are missing Nuri Sahin, Philipp Bargfrede and Kevin Möhwald – all our defensive midfielders. How do you deal with that as an offensive player?

Leonardo Bittencourt: "By defensively taking more responsibility. Of course, it's easier to go forward if you have a great holding player behind you who can recognise dangerous situations and break up attacks because you can just think offensively. Without them though, we’ll have to put in a real team performance if we want to win. "

Werder: Can you actually play as a holding midfielder?

Leonardo Bittencourt: "I actually played a few games as a holding player at Hoffenheim. If I have to, I’ll do it. I have the right mentality to play the position, but in terms of ruggedness and tactical discipline I may be a little too wild or too offensive to play there. It's not necessarily my position. "

Werder: During the international break, a lot of players weren’t with the team. How has the integration in to your new team gone?

Leonardo Bittencourt: "Nothing is perfect when you make a move somewhere new and there are always slight adjustment difficulties. But I know the league, I speak the language and I have some experience. The players support me out on the pitch. The key was that we won. "

Little things are crucial at this level.

Werder: Is it helpful to be on the pitch with players like Yuya, Nuri, and Claudio who you have played with at other clubs, or is it irrelevant because they have different goals?

Leonardo Bittencourt: "Yes, they have different targets now, but they are the same types of players with the same strengths and the same way of playing football. I know what Nuri can with the ball, even if he doesn’t see you. I know which foot Yuya wants the ball played to when standing with his back to the goal. This helps. Little things are crucial at this level. "

Werder: Do you think the Union players relate to Werder a little more after this hard-fought, emotional victory?

Leonardo Bittencourt: "I don’t know. These are definitely the games I like, games that have a great start with an even more positive ending. It makes it easier to integrate into the team, if you survive something like this together. As a newcomer, such a win at the start helps you enormously. "

Werder: Was there any unfinished business between you and Neven Subotic?

Leonardo Bittencourt: "Not that I know of."

Werder: You know him well. You played together at Dortmund and in Cologne ...

Leonardo Bittencourt: "On Saturday he had a red and white jersey on, we play for different teams now. He's not a guy who wants to hurt anyone. The foul was unfortunate and he’s a lot taller, which makes the whole thing look worse than it is. I don’t blame him for anything at all. "

Werder: In training you can be seen talking to Florian Kohfeldt and Ilia Gruev a lot. What are you discussing?

Leonardo Bittencourt: "We don’t have much time for me to get up to speed so I have to learn all the faster. I am new and didn’t have much of a pre-season with this team. Both of those guys try to give me a lot of advice.

Werder: Do you feel any extra pressure when the coach says publicly that you are his favourite player?

Leonardo Bittencourt: "Of course you read that. I hope that I live up to his expectations. I will do my utmost not to disappoint him, but you feel pressure every weekend. It’s a tough business and it’s fast-paced, but I can handle it. "

Werder: So you feel even more confident?

Leonardo Bittencourt: "Of course, confidence gives you a certain degree of security, because in this business a lot goes on in your head and there is a lot of competition for places. You have to have faith in your own abilities and be on the ball every single day; otherwise you will move in the opposite direction quickly. There are a lot of guys who are incredibly talented but who don’t play with their heads. "

Werder: On Saturday, it’s your first home game for Werder - against Leipzig of all people, your hometown. Is it going to be a special match for you?

Leonardo Bittencourt: "No, not really, because I left Leipzig at the age of three or four. I have no attachment to Leipzig, but I am pleased that in addition to Union Berlin, another "Eastern club" is in the first division. It’s invaluable for the region that Bundesliga football is played there regularly and it makes me really happy because I grew up in the East, but I feel no personal connection to RB, it's a game like any other for me. "
