Close to the final: Yuya Osako and Japan take on Iran this afternoon in the Asian Cup semi-final (15:00 CET). Japan beat Vietnam 1-0 to get through, whereas Iran registered a 3-0 victory over China. The winners will play either Qatar or the United Arab Emirates in the final on Friday 1st February.
Nürnberg next up: Following the action-packed 2-2 draw against Frankfurt on Saturday, Werder take on Nürnberg this weekend (Saturday 2nd February, 15:30 CET). The Green-Whites will be looking to climb even higher back up the table. However the game won’t be easy: “Because of their current situation, Nürnberg are very dangerous. However, we have to take another step towards the European spots,” said Martin Harnik. The striker is in good form at the moment, scoring Werder’s second with a calm finish against Frankfurt.
More good form: Max Kruse put in several good performances before the winter break, leading him to be nominated for December’s Player of the Month. Werder’s captain continued this run against Eintracht Frankfurt at the weekend, picking up an assist and getting into Sportschau’s Team of the Week. He had the most sprints (32), most touches (67), most passes (37), made the most runs (91) and played five crosses into the opponents’ box. Maximilian Eggestein also made it into the team after his goal and very good all-round performance in the game.
Together against right-wing populism: Werder president Dr. Hubertus Hess-Grunewald and Eintracht president Peter Fischer stood together against racism and right-wing populism before the game on Saturday evening. The pair took a photo together, with both clubs having campaigned against discrimination of any kind for years.
