SV Werder Bremen are in sore need of three points, with this weekend's home game against Borussia Mönchengladbach offering up another chance for the Green-Whites to get back to winning ways. Kick-off at the Weserstadion is at 15:30 CET on Saturday, 31st January 2026. Our match preview has all the information you need to know ahead of the match, including which players are available to feature.
Team news: Niklas Stark (hip problems), Maximilian Wöber (muscle problems), Mitchell Weiser (ACL) and Victor Boniface (knee surgery) are all still unavailable. Head coach Horst Steffen will also be without gegen Amos Pieper this weekend, after the defender had to undergo a medical procedure on his knee. Captain Marco Friedl is available for selection again after having served a yellow-card suspension against Leverkusen.
Head coach Horst Steffen on the opponent: “We don’t know for sure whether they’ll come and play with a back-three or back-four, and so we need to be prepared for a multitude of scenarios. For me, they’re a solid Bundesliga side, who have struggled for form over recent weeks. For that reason, it should be a fairly evenly matched affair.”
The last meetings: Borussia ran out 4-2 winners in the most recent meeting between the sides at the Weserstadion last season. Striker Alassane Plea had a hand in all four goals for the Foals back then (3 goals, 1 assist). Werder's goals came via a direct free-kick from Romano Schmid, as well as a penalty from André Silva. The Green-Whites will now seek to do the double over the Foals, having beaten them 4-0 in Mönchengladbach earlier this season, courtesy of goals from Samuel Mbangula, Jens Stage, Romano Schmid and Justin Njinmah.

The Mbangula Show: The aforementioned 4-0 win in Mönchengladbach was Werder's first win in 2025/26. Summer signing Samuel Mbangula opened the scoring with a sensational long-range strike, netting his first Bundesliga goal in the process. The Belgium U21 international then set up both his side's next two goals, as Jens Stage and Romano Schmid added their names to the scoresheet. Justin Njinmah rounded off an emphatic victory for the Green-Whites, scoring to make it 4-0.
A part of Bundesliga history: One of the more memorable clashes between the sides came back on 3rd April 1971 at the Bökelbergstadion in Mönchengladbach. Gladbach's Herbert Laumen collided with Werder goalkeeper Günter Bernard in the 88th minute, causing the former to fall into the goal net. This impact led to one of the goal posts breaking, resulting in the entire goal – which was still made of wood at the time – collapsing to the ground. The players and members of the groundskeeping team tried in vain to reassemble the goal, but were unsuccessful in their efforts. With no replacement goal available and the broken goal post unable to be repaired, referee Gert Meuser was forced to abandon the match in the 88th minute. Given that Gladbach, as the hosts, were responsible for making sure a replacement goal was available and of ensuring that the pitch was safe to play on, the match was later awarded as a 2-0 win to Werder.
