“A very disappointing day”
REACTIONS TO THE DEFEAT AWAY AT 1. FC KÖLN

An early goal conceded, and a long spell with ten men were just two of several challenges SV Werder Bremen had to contend with away at 1. FC Köln. Head coach Daniel Thioune and Romano Schmid both admitted after the match in the mixed zone that the defeat “really hurts”. WERDER.DE has rounded up the post-match reactions.
Head coach Daniel Thioune: “It hurts. We lost the match and our captain. We played for a long time with a man down and conceded a penalty as well. It was a very disappointing day overall. Our performance after going down to ten men wasn't good enough to threaten our opponents. Köln created far more chances than us, so it felt like a matter of time before the second or third goal would come. I would have liked to see us respond as a team after we made it 2-1, but unfortunately, we weren’t sharp enough to carve out too many chances.”
Goalscorer Romano Schmid: “The result hurts, and the way the game unfolded was extremely unfortunate for us. We didn’t manage to stand up in the key moments, and at times it felt too easy for them. We have to look ahead, even though that’s difficult after a game like this. The upcoming derby is hugely important for us, we have to make sure the three points stay here in Bremen.”
Goalkeeper Mio Backhaus: “We went a man down early on, but kept going right until the end. The team deserves credit for that. We’ll need to look at the key moments again – I can’t say too much about them right now. In the end, we have to accept decisions like the red card. Now it’s about analysing the match, putting it behind us quickly and focusing on the game against Hamburg.”
Senne Lynen: “We came here with a clear aim and then found ourselves behind after just a few minutes. Then the early red card gets thrown into the mix as well – that’s football. A lot went against us today, but we kept fighting until the end. The whole team showed the right commitment. In the end, we took risks and conceded a third. It was a crazy game. Now we just have to keep going and continue to show that energy on the pitch.”
Leonardo Bittencourt: “We could take the easy way out and blame a lot on the referee, but ultimately, we made mistakes as well. If you have to play that long with ten men, it’s always going to be difficult. It took us a bit of time to deal with that. Still, I thought we were properly in the game in the second half. We stayed patient, believed in ourselves and tried to force an opening. With a bit of luck, we might have got the equaliser, but today just wasn’t our day. Now it’s about regrouping, focusing on the week ahead and concentrating on ourselves.”
