Hunting a good result at the halfway mark

MATCH PREVIEW AHEAD OF MATCHDAY 17’S MIDWEEK CLASH WITH BVB

12/01/26

After Werder’s home game against TSG Hoffenheim had to be cancelled due to unplayable weather conditions, the Green-Whites are set to hit the halfway point of this Bundesliga season with a visit to Borussia Dortmund. The game will kick off at 20:30 CET at Signal Iduna Park. As they gear up for a belated start to a new year of football, Horst Steffen’s side will be keen to put in a passionate performance and take the fight to BVB.

The squad situation: As well as those players with long-term injury setbacks in Mitchell Weiser (ACL tear), Felix Agu (syndesmosis injury) and Victor Boniface (knee injury), defender Maximilian Wöber is also set to miss the trip to Dortmund due to muscular problems. In addition, Steffen will be unable to call upon Wesley Adeh or Niklas Stark on Tuesday night.

Immediate reinforcement up front: On Sunday, Werder announced the loan signing of centre-forward Jovan Milošević from VfB Stuttgart. The Serbian moves to Bremen off the back of two temporary moves elsewhere. He netted five times in 22 appearances for Swiss outfit FC St. Gallen, before completing a one-year loan move to Partizan Belgrade in January 2025, where he racked up 19 goals across all competitions. The 6’2” striker also celebrated his debut for the Serbia national side in November. Milošević looks set to add some attacking impetus by leading the line for SVW. Both head coach Horst Steffen and Werder’s head of professional football Peter Niemeyer highlighted the good fit between the forward’s profile and Werder’s style of play.

Head coach Horst Steffen on the opponent and new striker Jovan Milošević: “We want to defend well as a unit and try to disrupt their deliveries into the danger zone. We’re going to have to run a lot and really commit in the tackle. We’d love to put a few past them, just as Frankfurt did the other day. I’m expecting us to be courageous in our play and show a lot of spirit going forward.”

“We had a brief chat yesterday. He seems like a nice guy, open and friendly. We’ve brought in a player who can really add something to the team, who isn’t afraid to be selfish in front of goal which is something that will help us a lot. It’s possible that he’ll be involved on Tuesday, but of course he needs a few days to settle in.”

Recent encounters: Werder went unbeaten against Dortmund in the previous Bundesliga season, most recently coming back from a 2-0 deficit on matchday 19 at Signal Iduna Park to draw 2-2. The points were also shared on the Weser last campaign after a goalless draw in August 2024.

BVB’s fortress: As has been the case in many previous seasons, the difficulty of facing Dortmund at their own ground is once again strikingly evident in 2025/26. Head coach Niko Kovač’s side are currently undefeated at home this campaign, having dropped just four points in the league in front of the yellow wall. It’ll be far from a walk in the park for Werder, then, who have only picked up six points on the road since the start of the season.
