SV Werder Bremen produced an excellent performance to record back-to-back victories for the first time in the 2025/26 season. The Green-Whites ran out 4-1 winners against 1. FC Union Berlin at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei in a match full of memorable moments. WERDER.DE gathered the key reactions after the game.

Head coach Daniel Thioune: “Of course, I’m very pleased. After last week, our aim was to build on the  good result. We knew what kind of challenge awaited us and, after going 1-0 down, it was a top performance and a commanding display. With the deficit and the red card, there’s more pressure there than you might think. The team can go and enjoy the moment because they’ve been through a lot. But we still aren’t finished by any means.”

Goalscorer Jens Stage: “This is a huge win in a ground that’s always tough to come to. Our performances before the Heidenheim game were already decent, but we just couldn’t get the ball over the line. Today, it was a strong display with some really good goals. The key thing is picking up points from those good performances, and we did just that today. We’re absolutely delighted – together with the fans who supported us here. Their backing was crucial to us coming out on top today.”

Goalscorer Olivier Deman: “For me, this is a combination of the quality we already had and the spirit to keep fighting and working every day. The fact that we’ve started to score from set pieces is massive for us. We also used the man advantage much better than we have recently. I knew my goal was going in from the moment I struck the ball! The last two weeks have been good steps forward for us, but we have to keep going further.”

Debut goalscorer Patrice Čović: “We’re all incredibly happy that we were able to back up last weekend's win and even go one step further. It was a top performance; we were dominant from the start and rewarded ourselves in the end. I had a good feeling right from the beginning today, and when I saw the ball hit the back of the net, my head was all over the place. But in the end, I’m even happier that we won as a team.”

Goalkeeper Mio Backhaus: “Last week felt like a huge weight lifted off our shoulders. Today, even with a man advantage, we still had to play the game properly and score four goals. Every single one of us showed what we’re capable of. Every duel we win and every goal we score gives us a big lift. We’ve had plenty of those moments over the last two matches.”

Substitute Leonardo Bittencourt: “The start was difficult, but then we also had that bit of luck on our side that we’d been missing in recent weeks. We made much better use of our extra man and produced a very commanding performance without really letting them threaten us – credit to the team, honestly.”

Managing director for football Clemens Fritz: “It was another step forward. But we have to be aware that there’s nothing we can rest on. This is the first time we’ve won two games in a row – hopefully we can follow it up again next week.”
