Milošević goal not enough as Werder lose to St. Pauli

SV Werder Bremen missed out on what would have been a crucial three points in the fight to stay in the Bundesliga. In front of 29,546 spectators at the Millerntor-Stadion, the Green-Whites were beaten 2-1 by FC St. Pauli. Substitute Jovan Milošević scored almost immediately after coming on, but that wasn’t enough and Werder leave Hamburg empty-handed.

FIRST-HALF HIGHLIGHTSWerder in charge, Stage with a great chance

Daniel Thioune was forced to go without Karim Coulibaly due to the injury he picked up in the game against FC Bayern München. Samuel Mbangula, match-winner in the reverse fixture against St. Pauli, was brought in to replace him in the starting XI. Werder’s head coach was forced to make a second change shortly before kick-off, as Felix Agu picked up an injury during the warm-up – Isaac Schmidt was brought in to replace him at short notice.

The Green-Whites were the dominant side from the start, enjoying more control of the game and playing in St. Pauli’s half. After just a few seconds, Marco Grüll drove toward the St. Pauli penalty area but was stopped at the last moment by the combined efforts of Karol Mets and Hauke Wahl (1’). After that, however, the hosts made it difficult for SVW to get into dangerous positions in the final third.

Werder did look good going forwards. After Grüll won the ball high up, Romano Schmid had an effort blocked (23’). The best chance of the first half fell to Jens Stage, who had a great chance to open the scoring. A clever free-kick from Cameron Puertas was only parried by goalkeeper Nikolas Vasilj, but the Dane, somewhat surprised to see the ball at his feet, was unable to direct his left-footed effort on target (32’).

SECOND-HALF HIGHLIGHTSMilošević strikes, Fujita has the final say

The first big chance of the second half fell to SVW, when Mbangula curled a right-footed effort towards the St. Pauli goal, but Vasilj was equal to it (50’). Shortly after, the hosts took the lead. Danel Sinani delivered into the box and onto the head of Wahl, who headed towards the goal. Mio Backhaus was unfortunate to see the ball slip through his gloves and into the back of the net (55’).

Werder responded quickly through Milošević, who finished from close range after an Mbangula cross (62’). St. Pauli then regained their advantage, after Manolis Saliakas found Joel Fujita in behind, with the forward slotting his effort home past Backhaus (70’).

The rest of the game saw a lot of duels, with Werder losing their structure as they looked to throw everything they had into trying to find the equaliser. Despite pushing hard throughout the six minutes of stoppage time, the Green-Whites could not find the equaliser. Werder go again next Saturday at the Weserstadion, as they take on another relegation rival in 1. FC Heidenheim.
