SV Werder Bremen secured a point away at FC Augsburg in the final game of 2025, heading into the winter break after drawing 0-0 at the WWK ARENA. After a quiet first half, the 30,000 spectators witnessed an end-to-end second 45, although neither side was able to find the right finish to open the scoring.

FIRST HALFCorners galore, but nothing sticks

Werder set up in Bavaria with three changes to the previous starting XI. With Karim Coulibaly suspended and Samuel Mbangula ruled out with a knock picked up in training, Niklas Stark returned to the line-up while Isaac Schmidt was selected to make his starting debut against FCA. In addition, Cameron Puertas took the place of Marco Grüll, who began the game on the substitutes’ bench.  Captain Marco Friedl was judged fit enough to keep his place in the XI for the clash and started the match at the heart of a back three, which was soon put to the test after a cagey opening phase.

Alexis Claude-Maurice was the first to try his luck with a strike from range, although the effort was safely held by Mio Backhaus in the Werder net (9’). The danger was greater upon the next chance for FCA, as Kristijan Jakic poked the ball through to Marius Wolf. Germany U21 international Backhaus ran out to meet the onrushing Wolf, though, and blocked the shot with his shoulder to avoid an early deficit for SVW (10’).

The Green-Whites eventually began to find their groove, although struggled time and again to pick the final pass to set up a shot. Marco Friedl did send the ball floating dangerously across the six-yard box following a corner kick, although with no one in the right place at the right time, the chance went begging (15’). Shortly before the break, Keven Schlotterbeck got a headed touch on the ball to put Romano Schmid’s free-kick effort out for a corner, in the last of a few chances in an uneventful first half, all things considered (40').

SECOND HALFRexhebecaj hits the post, Claude-Maurice's goal struck off

However, the match more than picked up pace after the break. First, the Green-Whites counterattacked through Justin Njinmah, who spotted Puertas in space. The latter struck the delivery first time, but the side-footed effort fired clear of the bar (48’). Down the other end, Jakic almost managed to turn the ball in following a Claude-Maurice attempt, but Niklas Stark was on hand to prevent the Augsburger from taking the shot (52’). Green-White hearts were set racing on the hour mark, as Han-Noah Massengo headed the ball across goal and sent the attempt wide of the far post by a few inches (60’).

The Green-Whites were back to threatening from a corner soon after, as Pieper headed a Schmid delivery narrowly wide over the bar (67’). The hosts kept trying to beat Backhaus, with the next chance coming through Elvis Rexhbecaj with a curled effort that ricocheted off the outside of the post (76’). Claude-Maurice eventually succeeded in putting the ball in the back of the net, although a Jens Stage foul in the build-up meant the goal was struck off.

As the clock ticked down with seven minutes of added time on the board, neither team seemed satisfied with sharing the points. FCA keeper Dahmen got a crucial fingertip to the ball to deny substitute Patrice Čović (90+2’), while Philipp Tietz hit the crossbar with a headed effort (90+7’). Schmid just couldn’t find the right finish in the box in the dying seconds (90+8’), and the whistle eventually blew to confirm what had for half-an-hour seemed an unlikely result – a goalless draw.

The Bundesliga now pauses for the winter break, before league action returns in January 2026 with midweek football on the schedule soon after. Werder are back at the Weserstadion for their next run-out in the German top flight, as TSG Hoffenheim head up to Bremen for matchday 16.
