“It’s a shame for the boys after so much hard work”

It can’t be denied that SV Werder Bremen produced an impressive display for large stretches of the game at Borussia Dortmund. When the final whistle blew, though, a heavy 3-0 defeat was confirmed, and therefore the Green-Whites appeared disappointed in the Mixed Zone after the game.
Head coach Horst Steffen: “That result is a harsh one, because we put in a good performance. We kept coming up with ways to deal with them, managed to play our way up the pitch and kept the game very much open right up to the 76th minute, staying toe-to-toe with them and creating our own chances. The team showed a lot of self-belief, but when that second goal went in, the game was done. It’s a shame for this team, because the boys put in a lot of hard work in their defending tonight.”
Captain Marco Friedl: “The result feels more convincing than it was across the 90 minutes. We played maybe the best 60 minutes we have all season, and for me we were the better side. We let the game go off the rails after a set piece. When you have three, four top-quality chances, you have to take one of them. We weren’t able to do that and so it hurts to lose the game.”
Debutant Jovan Milosevic: “It was a difficult game against a strong opponent. Some aspects were good, but we’ve still got a lot of room for improvement. I’m glad to have made my debut and I’m excited for the games to come. Right now, I’m looking forward to experiencing my first game at home.”

Justin Njinmah: “We started well in the match, I had one or two chances that I really need to be taking. Then we concede an easy goal from a corner and go in 1-0 down at half time. We had high hopes and then we went and conceded another, so ultimately Dortmund deserved the win tonight. However, we're leaving here with the feeling that we could have got more out of the game, we just didn't manage to make it happen.”
Isaac Schmidt: “It’s frustrating, because we put in a really good performance in that first half. We still have a lot of things that we can be doing better. Still, we pressed well, and I think that we deserved more. At the end of the day, though, we just weren’t good enough.”
Managing director for sport, Clemens Fritz: “We produced a good display away from home for 60 or 70 minutes, at least in terms of our approach, the structure and the spaces we wanted to exploit. But you also have to take your chances and score. Dortmund didn’t play their best game, but they still put in a very experienced performance, especially in a midweek game like this. Both teams made a number of misplaced passes, which made life difficult for us and gave them opportunities to break. Even so, in terms of our overall approach, it was a step forward. Despite that, we’re going home with no points, and that really hurts when you’ve put in a solid performance like that.”
